Girls Basketball: Convent advances with rout of Sonoma Academy
By Chris McGuire
Convent of the Sacred Heart cruised to a 84-49 victory over Sonoma Academy on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the CIF-North Coast Section Division V playoffs.
The Cubs (24-3) will face Bay Counties League West foe University on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
The second-seeded Cubs outscored Sonoma (16-8) in every quarter and were led offensively by senior forward Scarlett Kirk, who finished with a team-high 25 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and four steals.
“I love my teammates they all work hard and we really want to keep going,” said Kirk. “Since I’ve been here we have never been past the second round. Now all the hard practices coach puts us through are paying off. There is no slacking off allowed.”
Convent junior India Pearce added 16 points, four rebounds and four assists.
The lone bright spot for Sonoma was Kate Bayes, who finished with a game-high 33 points, to go along with six rebounds and three assists.
Even with the loss, Sonoma Head Coach Kevin Christiansen was satisfied with the Coyotes’ season as a whole.
“We have a tough team,” Christiansen said. “Last year we were the [Division VI] champions and now, with a higher enrollment, we had to move up to [Division V], so our seniors have proven to be invaluable team leaders.”
