Waldorf started off its semifinal game against Rincon Valley Christian with three quick baskets in the first minute and never looked back in its 69-48 victory in the CIF-North Coast Section Division VI playoffs on Wednesday at City College of San Francisco.
With the win, Waldorf advances to play top-seeded Ferndale High School in the final on Saturday. The Wolverines (18-7) will have to make a 250-mile trip north for the game, which will be hosted by Ferndale
Led by Alexander Woodhouse and Peter Schwarzenbach, who had 17 and 15 points respectively, the Wolverines never lost the lead throughout the game.
With five minutes left, Rincon Valley Christian (18-12) brought the deficit to within seven points on a 13-0 run, but after calling a timeout the Wolverines followed up with a 14-0 run, eliminating any potential threat.
“We wanted to come out fast; our game is the transition game,” Schwarzenbach said. “We did have a lot of turnovers, but I guess that was ok.”
Junior captain Taylor Shahi was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 14 points, followed closely by T.J. Robert and John Edens, who had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
“When we stayed composed and run our offense, that’s when we make our best runs,” Shahi said. “As a small team, we have to penetrate, which is why we were at the free throw line so often.”
In total, the Eagles took 25 free throws and made 18 of them.
