University High School shut out Urban High School in a strong 13-0 showing in the semifinal round of the Bay Counties League playoffs at Paul Goode Field on Wednesday.

The top-seeded Red Devils (10-9, 5-1) were led by attackers Austin Shea, Henry Steyer and Matt Galardi, who combined for eight of the 13 goals scored.

“This is the playoffs,” said Red Devils Co-Head Coach Nick Lockwood. “We came out ready to play, and we stressed the fact that every game could be your last game. The kids responded and came out hard.”

The fifth seeded Blues (7-9, 3-5) were held to seven shots on goal, four of which came from senior Sam Cash.

University goaltender Nick Massa had turned away every shot en route to his first shutout of the season.

Urban, in only its second varsity lacrosse season, made the playoffs for the first time this season and had its first playoff win against Sonoma Academy on Monday.

“We never got in a rhythm today, although the team that came out to play today was much better than the team that played three months ago,” said Urban Head Coach Warren Pringle. “They have improved so much as a team.”

The Blues were led by Cash in ground balls and shots on goal, but the Red Devils swarmed him on the defensive end with double teams.

“They knew he was our best player and they came out and double-teamed him and even when he got past them, there was another defender waiting,” Pringle said. “[University] came out with a lot more intensity than we expected. We weren’t prepared for it at all.”

The Red Devils advance to face two-seed Marin Academy, which defeated Lick-Wilmerding 12-8 in the other semifinal on Monday at Marin Academy.

The Wildcats (13-0, 8-0) come in undefeated, but were the BCL’s two-seed because they are in the league’s lower division. Marin Academy dispatched University 7-5 in their only meeting on April 20.
