SanFranPreps.com Player of the Week: Lazare Gubeladaze, senior running back, Lincoln football
By Jeremy Balan
Not too many things went well for Lincoln in its 62-20 loss to El Cerrito, but one thing that stood out was the play of senior running back Lazare Gubeladze.
Gubeladze provided all of the Mustangs’ offense, beginning with a 95-yard kick return for a touchdown in the first quarter. He also an for a team-high 112 yards on 14 carries and touchdown runs of 30 and 35 yards in the second half.
“Although it was a very disappointing day for our program, Lazare showed a glimmer of hope for our program,” said Lincoln head coach Phil Ferrigno. “Although he made some mistakes in his all-around play, his effort was consistent throughout the game. Hopefully. Lazare can inspire our other players to be the best they can be.”
The effort was a breakout performance, as the senior was held to just 97 yards on 51 carries in the three games prior.
Honorable Mention: Andres Arellano, junior wide receiver, Balboa football
Arellano was a big-play threat throughout the Bucs’ 54-19 loss to Sequoia on Friday, with two 50-yard touchdown receptions where he simply outran the Cherokees defenders.
“We saw an opportunity and he was taking advantage of the guy who was on him,” Carvajal said. “We just let him make a play.”
He finished with 147 yards on four receptions and figures to be a deep-ball threat in the Bucs’ spread offense when AAA play begins this week.
