Football: Nelson and Galileo pound Burton in AAA opener

By Graham Henderson

On the second play of Galileo High School’s first possession, standout Lions senior running back Quincy Nelson fumbled the ball.

It was the only big mistake he or his team would make for the rest of their 49-6 rout of Burton on Saturday at Burton High School.

The Academic Athletic Association-opening win came as a relief to Galileo (2-3, 1-0), which had lost its last three last three games.

“It shows the league who we really are,” Nelson said. “We had a point to prove today, and we proved it.”

Nelson almost single-handedly led the Galileo offense, carrying the ball 19 times for a 231 yards and four touchdowns.

“I couldn’t do it without my team,” Nelson said. “My line helped out a lot, they did great. That’s all we’ve been working on for practice — blocking and tackling.”

While the offensive line created holes for Nelson, the Galileo defensive line dominated its Burton (1-3, 0-1) counterparts. Burton quarterback Alex Moreno was sacked four times and was constantly under pressure as his line collapsed around him.

“We controlled the line of scrimmage,” said Galileo head coach Mark Huynh. “That was key today.”

Moreno was held to just 13 yards on 3-of-12 passing attempts, but did score the Pumas’ only points on a 3-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter.

While Nelson’s running game led the way, Galileo senior quarterback Jonathan Lu held his own, throwing the ball for 81 yards on 5-of-7 passing.

Lu connected with senior Waynelle Buckner for a 21-yard touchdown pass, and also scored a touchdown on the ground, when he ran 73 yards to score, on a strange quarterback sneak that left the Burton defense confused and out of position.

Despite the dominating win, Huynh said the team still needs to improve.

“The guys are starting to understand what they need to do,” he said. “But guys are missing their assignments, and when they miss assignments, big plays happen. These guys play hard, and we had to match that.”
