Kuhel had a school-record 30 kills in the Wolverines key win over Bay on Tuesday, which helped them secure the top seed in the Bay Counties League Central playoffs that begin on Wednesday.

She also had 13 blocks and five aces in the match.

“Isabel had a great game and she’s definitely one of the best in the league,” said Waldorf head coach Jen WIsner. “She just has the extra edge to keep the team [motivated]. She’s really knowledgeable and she’s my voice on the court.”

Waldorf will face fourth-seeded Leadership on Wednesday.

Honorable Mention: Fauris Franco, junior forward/goalkeeper, Gateway soccer

Franco had two goals in the Gators’ BCL Central semifinal win over Bay then scored a goal and had a key save in penalty kicks in Gateway’s upset win over International in the league final.

“He was on, and when he’s on, we do well,” said Gateway head coach Joe Killmaier.

Honorable Mention: Devonta Gaines, senior running back, Mission football

Gaines had a total of 180 yards on 27 carries in Mission’s win over Galileo on Friday, but 116 of those yards and three touchdowns came in the second half.

“We wanted to beat the defending champs and we showed we could do it,” Gaines said. “We didn’t have a season last year, so we’re the underdogs. I think we sent a message.”
