Football: Washington knocks Marshall out of playoff picture in shutout
By Josh Levine
Behind the stellar play of running backs Jeremy Jetton and Lajarie Mabrey, Washington High School shut out visiting Marshall High School 24-0 in Academic Athletic Association play on Friday.
Jetton and Mabrey combined for 167 of the Eagles’ 223 rushing yards and each contributed a touchdown.
“We were slow to figure things out early on, but we really got on a roll in the second quarter,” said Washington head coach Karl Finley. “Marshall has some really good talent and they played us hard.”
With the loss, the Phoenix (2-7, 2-4) have been eliminated from playoff contention.
“We just have to keep our heads up,” said Marshall head coach Kamon Pierce. “Our future is here and we’ll be all right. We need to become more disciplined and spend more time, not only with the playbook, but in the classroom as well.”
The Eagles (7-2, 5-1) now share second place with Galileo in the AAA and will likely face the Lions in the postseason.
“For us to do well in the playoffs, we need to improve on tackling and special teams,” Finley said. “We’ve lost two games due to special teams, and we focused on that today and besides the missed field goal, we did really well.”
Washington junior quarterback Aram Gevandian went threw for 83 yards and a touchdown on 6-of-12 passing, while his Marshall counterparts, Marcus Blacksher and Joseph Sagiao, combined for 5-of-20 passing for 67 yards and two interceptions.
Washington will play Galileo next week, while Marshall will head to face first place Mission.
“They’re still undefeated in league and we want to put one loss in that column,” Pierce said of the Bears. “We had some small breakdowns today, but we can only improve.”
