Every Monday, we will be selecting a player of the week who shows extraordinary effort and performance on the field or court in the prior week. We will be taking nominations from coaches, athletic directors and fans. Please send potential players of the week to contact@SanFranPreps.com.
SanFranPreps.com Player of the Week: Johnny Mrlik, senior guard, St. Ignatius boys basketball
Mrlik, in many ways, has grown into the Wildcats’ go-to scorer, and he certainly showed it last week.
He started the week with a game-high 16 points against rival Sacred Heart Cathedral, where his crucial eight points in the final quarter held off a late Irish run.
Mrlik had 16 points again on Thursday, when the Wildcats shocked the WCAL with a stunning upset of Archbishop Mitty.
But it may have been his performance on Saturday, in a loss, that was most impressive. Mrlik had a game-high 27 points in the Wildcats disappointing loss against St. Francis, where no other Wildcats finished with more than eight points.
Honorable mention: Benjamin Faustine, senior forward, Lick-Wilmerding boys basketball
You have to go all the way down to the bottom of the Tigers’ stat sheet to find Faustine’s true worth.
The 6-foot-1 senior averages just 3.2 points per game, but has taken a staggering 26 charges on the season, including three against Stuart Hall last week. Faustine has taken four or more charges in three games this year, and is tied for the state lead in charges taken according to Maxpreps.com (note: not all teams put their stats up on Maxpreps and not all teams keep stats for charges taken).
