SanFranPreps.com Player of the Week: Gione Edwards, junior forward, Mission boys basketball
Edwards, a 6-foot-4 junior, sure waited for the perfect time to have his best game of the season.
He struck for 28 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and three assists in a win against Washington on Tuesday, helping the Bears clinch the Academic Athletic Association’s Lang Division.
Edwards followed that performance with 15 points and eight rebounds in the Bears’ first-round playoff win over Galileo on Friday.
Honorable mention: Johnny Mrlik, senior guard, St. Ignatius boys basketball
Not a bad week for the West Catholic Athletic League’s leading scorer, as Mrlik was named to the first team of the All-WCAL team, then scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds against Riordan in the CIF-Central Coast Section playoffs on Saturday.
Honorable mention: Mariah Masoli, junior guard, Mercy girls basketball
Mercy needed every one of Masoli’s season-high 28 points in a razor-thin 56-55 win over Menlo in the CCS Division IV quarterfinals on Saturday. She also had four rebounds, four assists and three rebounds in the winning effort.
Honorable mention: Graham Gilleran, sophomore forward, Riordan boys basketball
The Crusaders’ season may have ended against St. Ignatius on Saturday, but they may have also gotten a glimpse of their future based on the breakout play of Gilleran, who had his first double-double against Seaside on Thursday with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
He followed that performance with another 12 points against St. Ignatius on Saturday, to go along with eight rebounds.
