Wrestling: Riordan continues breakout season, freshmen make impression on AAA

San Francisco will be well-represented at the CIF wrestling state championships in Bakersfield this weekend.
Headlining the group of wrestlers is a pair from Archbishop Riordan High School, which had a school-record four Central Coast Section medalists and two finalists in the section championships Saturday.
Senior Paul Ahern and sophomore Zac Contreras will represent the Crusaders in Bakersfield.
Riordan had a standout season, but the Academic Athletic Association made some history of its own.
Washington High School won its fourth consecutive AAA title, matching their run of four championships from 2001-2004.
Washington took the team glory, but a trio of freshmen may have the lasting impact.
Washington’s Eric Royfman (103-pound class), Balboa’s Emil DeGuzman (112) and Lincoln’s Jonathan Limon (160) all won their weight classes, catching San Francisco Section commissioner Don Collins by surprise.
“No ninth-graders have won section titles in recent memories,” Collins said in a media release. “We’ll have to check the section records to see when the last time a ninth-grader won a wrestling title.”
All winners of the AAA’s 14 weight classes will also compete at the state championships.
