SanFranPreps.com Player of the Week: Mat Collins, senior outside hitter, St. Ignatius boys volleyball
The Wildcats needed every one of Collins’ match-high 19 kills in a five-game, upset win over top-seeded Bellarmine to clinch their first West Catholic Athletic League title in school history on Thursday.
When it mattered most, Collins was a force, as five of the final six St. Ignatius points in the final game came from Collins’ kills, including the championship clinching point.
“I knew the ball was going to me, I hit it, and I couldn’t see whether it was in or out,” Collins said. “I just saw everyone jumping around and it just feels awesome right now.”
Honorable mention: Alejandra Sanchez, junior forward, Lowell girls soccer
Likely locking up the Academic Athletic Association’s Most Valuable Forward award, Sanchez put on a show in the first half of the AAA championship game against Lincoln.
She scored the first three goals of the game, giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead at the half, then tacked on the final goal of the game.
Honorable mention: Alex Arnold, junior pitcher, Balboa baseball
Arnold started the week by leading the Bucs at the plate, with a 4-for-4, four RBI performance against Mission in the first round of the AAA playoffs.
Then he did it on the mound in an upset win over Lowell in the AAA semifinals. Arnold allowed just two runs in a complete game win, and will likely be the starting pitcher against Washington in the championship game on Thursday.
