Football Preview: Early playoff exit will drive Mission in 2011

By Jeremy Balan

In the 2010 season, Mission High School went through a process of development, from upstart to Cinderella to unlikely juggernaut.

But despite their success, an undefeated Academic Athletic Association season and a regular-season league title, the mention of one game is met by returning Mission players with clenched jaws and shaking heads.

As the top seed in the AAA playoffs, the Bears dropped their semifinal matchup to fourth-seeded Balboa, missing out on an opportunity to win their first Turkey Bowl title since 1954.

Football Preview: Lowell looks to rebound from dismal 2010 campaign

By Dante Quazzo

The 2010 season was not kind to the Lowell High School football team. In fact, it was one of the worst in the school’s recent history.

The Cardinals finished just 1-8 (1-6 in Academic Athletic Association play), with their only win coming in the final game of the season, and were outscored 341-143.

Despite last season’s struggles, Lowell head coach Danny Chan sees reason for optimism heading into the 2011 campaign.

By Jeremy Balan

In a banner year for St. Ignatius girls athletics, Maria Kemiji-McDonald was often in the center of the action.

Arguably the most athletic player on the field or court in any given game, the three-sport standout was a key component in each of her teams’ successes this year, amassing a combined 75-17 record across the volleyball, basketball and lacrosse seasons.

That’s why she’s the SanFranPreps.com Female Athlete of the Year.

SanFranPreps.com Male Athlete of the Year: Christian Pulusian

By Bonta Hill

When thinking about the best prep male athlete in San Francisco, names like University’s Noah Springwater, St. Ignatius’s Johnny Mrlik and Washington’s Jeremy Jetton pop up immediately.

While those respective student athletes had excellent seasons for their schools, the impressive senior season of Balboa High School’s Christian Pulusian exceeded them all, as the three-sport star has earned the accolade of SanFranPreps.com Male Athlete of the Year.
