Games of the day – Galileo vs. Burton football: Galileo (2-1) needs to bounce back from a rough loss last week and Burton will be playing its first game in four weeks. Washington vs. Lowell football: The Eagles took last year’s Battle of the Birds, but the Cardinals have split the last eight meetings in the rivalry. St. Ignatius vs. Mitty football: The Wildcats (2-1) open up WCAL play on the road against the Monarchs (2-1), who beat state champ Palo Alto in their final non-league game. Football Game of the Week: The Battle of the Birds

For both Lowell and Washington, non-league play provided extreme highs and lows, making the first rivalry game of the season that much more intriguing.

The two teams meet annually for the Battle of the Birds, in the only Academic Athletic Association night game of the season. This year’s meeting will open the AAA season at Kezar Stadium on Friday night.

Game of the day – Lincoln vs. Lowell boys soccer: The only two remaining undefeated teams in the Academic Athletic Association will meet for their only regular-season matchup this season. Girls Volleyball: Sacred Heart can’t hold off Mitty in WCAL opener

After winning the first two games against visiting Archbishop Mitty and the way Sacred Heart Cathedral has been playing, nobody would have thought the match would have turned out the way it did.

The Irish couldn’t put away the pesky Monarchs, letting their two-game advantage slip away in a 23-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-12 loss in the West Catholic Athletic League opener for both teams.

Girls Volleyball: Lick-Wilmerding takes Convent to the brink

Convent of the Sacred Heart High School’s girls volleyball team may have just needed a wake-up call to close out Lick-Wilmerding on Tuesday.

After controlling the first two games, the visiting Cubs allowed Lick to rally back, but returned to their dominant form in the deciding fifth game of a 25-17, 25-13, 22-25, 21-25, 15-6 Bay Counties League West win.

Game of the day – Convent vs. Lick-Wilmerding girls volleyball: The Tigers have yet to play a BCL West match yet, and the Cubs dropped their first league match to University, but the two teams faced off in a tournament on Sept. 17, with Convent coming out on top 25-22, 24-26, 15-10.
