A 51-yard pass from James Lewis to Keith Lewis was all visiting Oakland Tech needed to stun Balboa High School’s football team on Saturday afternoon.

After Balboa took the lead on an 18-yard touchdown run by quarterback Andres Arellano in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs responded with the Lewis to Lewis touchdown pass with 50 seconds remaining to clinch the 26-21 victory.

“In reality, we just let this one get away from us,” said Balboa head coach Alvaro Carvajal. “In the end, you have to finish and we didn’t do that today.”

Balboa (1-1) got behind early, allowing the Bulldogs (1-0) to score on their first two drives of the game. Both scores came on runs from senior tailback Evan Williams.

“We have a good line, so we just let them open up the holes and we run through them,” Williams said.

Despite being down, Balboa regained some momentum when senior Keene Roque intercepted Lewis’s pass with 1:07 remaining in the half. The interception led to a 5-yard touchdown run from Arellano that cut the Oakland Tech lead to 12-7 at the break.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter, but it all came down to the final minutes of the fourth.

After the game, Carvajal was still proud of his team.

“I know my kids can play, but at the end of the game, when they are out there playing, they have to finish and they will. They will learn from this,” Carvajal said. “They are great kids and they are resilient and I am lucky to have them.”

Way to compete Balboa, keep working hard and fighting and good things will come your way. Andres Arellano is doing a good job and is the cousin of Bobby Arenas who’s a 10th grader Qb at Riordan now and was at SHC last year. Keep your heads up kids and stay positive..
