After starting off the season 0-4 in Academic Athletic Association play, the Burton High School’s offense more than doubled its season point total in a 52-46 shootout win over visiting Marshall on Saturday.

“It was nice to get the monkey off our back, especially because we have been on the cusp so many times,” said Burton head coach Anthony Rollins. “It sucks that it was against [Marshall], because we are good friends and it had playoff implications for them.”

Both teams now need to win the final two games of the season for an outside shot at the final playoff spot, and need Lowell to lose its final two games and Balboa to lose at least one more game.

“It was a fun game today,” said Marshall head coach Kamon Pierce. “It was like arena football with a 100-yard field. It was a good game, though, and we had fun.”

The Burton offense was sustained by three rushing touchdowns and a kick return for a score by senior running back Delron Marman, who finished with 96 rushing yards on 11 carries.

“As a senior, this really means a lot,” Marman said. “I’m just trying to keep up and we keep on fighting through.”

Marshall was fueled by a solid performance from quarterback Joey Sagiao.

Sagiao, who completed 17-of-28 passes for 301 yards and four touchdowns, did all he could to muster a Phoenix comeback at the end, but four straight incomplete passes with less than two minutes remaining secured the Burton victory.

Sagiao’s favorite target, Mark Alexander, had nine receptions for 175 yards and three touchdowns.

“We played cool, but we made some stupid decisions at the end,” Alexander said. “It’s cool that we have a chance to make the playoffs and that I could lead us there.”

Burton has no chance of making it to the playoffs. Their last two opponents are good and I don’t think they will be playing very good from now on.
