Prep Wrapup: Bay boys basketball gets second win in impressive fashion

Boys Basketball: Bay 70, Chinese Christian (San Leandro) 39

The Breakers (2-0) have started the season with a flourish and showed they can put points up quickly against the Rams (0-3).

Senior point guard Zev Newman led the way with 22 points and four steals, and senior shooting guard Connor Mattoon added 19 points and six steals, but it was the early hot shooting from junior James Wasney, who finished with nine points, that put Bay up early.

Eric Zheng had a team-high 18 points for Chinese Christian in the loss.

Girls Basketball: Drew 46, Gateway 25

The Dragons (1-0) opened their season on a high note behind a solid shooting performance from junior Victoria Verdan and handed the Gators (0-1) their first loss of the season.

Verdan had 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range to finish with 15 points and three steals. Drew also got solid contributions from junior Neff Rogers (12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks) and senior Marisa Hedgpeth (Nine points, nine rebounds, and five steals).

Boys Basketball: Gateway 47, Drew 34

The Gators (1-0) took the season-opener for both teams with a balanced offense led by Evan Derheim, Kenechi Anigbogu and Raymond Porter, who finished with 10, nine and eight points, respectively.

Brice Lockard led Drew (0-1) with a game-high 14 points in the loss.
