Games of the day – St. Ignatius vs. Canyon girls basketball: The Wildcats will look to wrap up their Southern California trip against arguably their best opponent of the season. The Comanches (5-3) went 24-9 last season en route to a Southern Section Division II-A championship last season and only lost two seniors to graduation. Balboa vs. Riordan boys basketball: The Crusaders dispatched City opponent University with ease last night, but Balboa is 10-2 and is an entirely different team from the one that lost last season’s meeting 78-43. Mercy might get the No.1 spot this coming Monday because of SI’s loss today in girls hoops.

SI still holds down the number one spot even after the loss today…best team in the city right now. Cant knock them after a loss to a very good Canyon team from SoCal

      • Feel The Pain says:

I agree, you can’t drop them for traveling on the road against a solid southern california team while Mercy played a local schedule against subpar schools. It reaffirms Mercy’s hold on #2, but in no way warrants a drop for SI from the top spot. I’ve seen them both play and SI would win by 10+ points. Can’t penalize the wildcats for challenging themselves with a road trip.

On the basis of wins and loses maybe Mercy deserves no. 1 ranking but on the basis of strength of the opposition SI is clearly no. 1 still, teams played by SI are far more skilled and ranked high in the state, whereas Mercy’s teams played are not as skilled and ranked. I don’t know why Mercy have a very easy
preseason, they have not played any strong team yet, SI played Terra Nova and Canyon (Anaheim). Terra Nova had a lopsided win against Mercy last year if I’m not mistaken. So, if either Mercy or SI is no.1 i am not
surprised. I like both teams anyway.

    • SF says:

Not too sure about that. I believe Canyon was the Southern Section 2A champion last season. Even though Mercy is undefeated, I’d still think that SI would be #1 in the City. If Mercy beats Pinewood, then I think they would be #1.

Pinewood is still a strong team, even with D1 recruits Seto and Eackles graduated! Pinewood beat Mercy by 37 and 35 points last year, Mercy might beat them this year.

  2. WCAL Alum says:

Unlikely, but it will be closer.

  3. Fan says:

Riordan played tough defense again tonight to limit Balboa to under 40 points. The AAA teams lack defense structure and it shows when they play teams that play defense. Mabrey again was too quick to contain, think Arenas had another double double game, Harvey was driving to the hoop strong. Overall Riordan was the better team again.

  4. E. K. says:

    Wallenberg wins, 55-48.

  5. JJ says:

I don’t think losing to one of the best teams in southern California warrants SI dropping to a #2 rank in the City.

  6. ARHS Stats says:

SanFranPreps And that’s it from the Crusader Forum, Riordan dominates Balboa 67-39. Final.

  7. Anonymous says:

Rankings doesn’t matter after all, Canyon is ranked lower than SI.

  8. Fan says:

Thought score was Riordan 67- Balboa 39. That score looks like last night score against University.

  9. SHC Alum says:

    JJ why not

  10. SHC Alum says:

    Mercy 12-0, SI 6-1 who will # 1 JB ?

  11. Anonymous says:

    Burton Boys -59
    Leadership – 35

Burton was up 37-11 at half
