Boys Basketball: Lincoln can’t overcome early cold streak in loss to Terra Linda

By Aidan Fitzsimon

KENTFIELD — Despite outscoring Terra Linda over the final three quarters at the Don Bambauer Classic, Lincoln High School fell to the Trojans 62-54 on Friday at Marin Catholic.

The Mustangs (5-9) tried to mount a comeback but couldn’t overcome a five-point first-quarter offensive performance.

Lincoln shot 25 percent in the first period and trailed the Trojans (6-6) 14-5 after the first quarter. Frustration mounted for the Mustangs as their shooters’ open looks didn’t produce points.

The Mustangs improved offensively in the second quarter, scoring 19 points, but the Lincoln defense couldn’t slow down the Terra Linda offense. The Trojans scored 20 points in the quarter and took an eight-point lead into halftime.

“I thought we beat a scrappy squad out there today and for the most part we executed, but we have to work on end-of-game situations,” said Terra Linda head coach Steve Farbstein.

Gui Fonseca led the way for Terra Linda with 25 points, often scoring on backdoor passes and second-chance put-backs.

“Gui had a real solid game for us today,” Farbstein said. “He’s been our steadiest guy all year.”

The Trojans kept Lincoln in the game, though. shooting just 14-of-35 from the charity stripe.

The Mustangs pulled within six points with 3 minutes to go, but two consecutive turnovers ended any hopes of a comeback.

Seniors Chris Young and Nick Young led Lincoln with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

“What’s happened with us the last couple of games is we’ve dug ourselves a hole that’s to hard to come back from,” said Lincoln head coach Matt Jackson. “We got down early and then we had to spend a lot of energy trying to come back and that wears you down.”
