Games of the day – Sacred Heart Cathedral vs. St. Ignatius boys soccer: The Irish head to the Sunset with a one-loss record and are currently in a first-place tie in the WCAL. The Wildcats haven’t been as impressive in the early season, but the teams split their two games last year. Riordan vs. St. Ignatius boys basketball: The two City WCAL schools open up league play with a rivalry game. Both teams currently have winning records, but could struggle in league play. Sacred Heart Cathedral vs. Serra boys basketball: The Irish have been one of the most impressive Bay Area teams this season, but suffered their worst loss in recent memory the last time they took on the Padres. After beating Serra twice in the regular season, the Irish fell 73-29 to the Padres in the WCAL playoffs last year. 1. Both WCAL games in the City will be entertaining. Although SHC is undefeated (and playing at home), dont count out a very scrappy Serra team from taking SHC out of their game. Will be toss up despite the records.

As for SI/Riordan-match-up on Domingo and Riordan’s pressense in the paint will determine victor. Is the game to watch in The City this evening (if only for the concession stand-did I hear they got rid of pasta bowl? No!!) Slight edge to Cats.

  2. Domingo should start going inside more given his height and talent advantage, but if Riordan bangs on the boards then they will come away with a close win.

    • You cant make a “soft” player play tough. He will live on the perimeter. If you morphed Aguilar’s toughness into Domingo then you got yourself a real good player.

  3. Prediction on Riordan-SI basketball game tonite: SI 51. Riordan 46

  4. Very sloppy 1st quarter in Riordan-SI game. Recap of 1st quarter was missed layup, missed 3, turnover, missed layup, bad pass, repeat

  5. Just got home from the SI – Riordan game. It was closely contested for three quarters but SI pulled away in the fourth quarter. Domingo was better in the second half as they repeatedly posted him down low and Riordan doesn’t have the length to contest him around the rim. Riordan is going to have a long year in the WCAL due to their lack of size and lack of consistent shooters.

    • The 1st half was very sloppy. At times, it felt like watching a CYO basketball game. 2nd half was more entertaining. Like you said, SI was posting up Domingo in the 4th quarter and Riordan had no answer for him. Dunbar made a couple spectacular passes. Terrance Roberts, Jr also stepped up and had a good game. The Cats will need him to make contributions off the bench in order for SI to succeed in the WCAL. AS for Riordan, they probably need to shoot more 3s and try to get as many loose balls as possible. I think they have good guards and their big men have grit, but they can’t match up with other WCAL big men. The game was closer than what the final score indicates.

  6. SHC looked a little out of synch in the first quarter vs. Serra but a last-second three-point play by Josh Fox at the first half buzzer seemed to give the Irish momentum heading into the third. SHC played much better in the third as they outscored Serra 24-14. SHC had as much as a thirteen point lead twice in the second half and came out with a 67-56 win.

  7. Also on Fri. 12/16, the Mercy girls soccer team lost to Lynbrook (San Jose) 6-0.

  8. Although SI won this battle I didn’t find them all that impressive especially how everyone talks about their big/strong presence Bring back the pasta bowl Crusader Grill! Good turn out tonight

    • I don’t know where you have been, but ever since SI’s game vs Jesuit, people have been commenting on the lack of SI’s inside presence, not how big and strong their inside presence is.

  9. Riordan was out of sync with the missed opportunities to score. Mabrey had a tough game, I don’t think he scored a point. They didn’t match up well with the physical play inside at all. I known Aguilar is not a 100% but he was banging hard for position and those Riordan bodies were being pushed all over the place. It was pretty ugly offensive wise for both teams before SI pulled away. Those kids need to gain some muscle and live in the weight room so they have the strength to match up with teams, if not they will be o-fer like their football team in league, which I would hate to see given the history of their basketball program.

    • I think Riordan can beat Valley Christian and maybe steal a game against St Francis and maybe Bellarmine too. Mabrey would’ve scored if he didn’t miss that wide open layup on essentially the 1st scoring opportunity of the game. I think he heard Domingo’s footsteps behind him and rolled the ball off the rim.

  10. I prefer the tri-tip sandwich … was the pep band there tonight?

    • I showed up 20 minutes before the game and the band wasn’t there.

      • Riordan is still out for the holidays so I assume that’s why the Band wasn’t there. We sure missed them as well as the student cheering section.

        • I hear the band doesn’t want to play for the teams. All they feel they want to do is do competitions and win trophies. The band has always been there for support, and I think Riordan is slowly losing that. Not to mention no Alma Mater at the end. I can’t recall a home WCAL game in the past where there was no Alma Mater.

Stephen Domingo missed a wide open dunk, shot nothing but three pointers and long jumpers (and missed all of them), and shot an occasional layup. He couldn’t dominate an undersized Riordan team at 6’7″. I am seriously questioning how he is ranked so high nationally. Terribly overrated, not to mention that his attitude needs work.

    • SI JV game was more exciting then the Varsity game last night. I am just saying for being there early to watch Vars game. SI has a good point guard…probably scored over 10 points.

    • Domingo did have an an “average” game, but he still scored 18 pts on all those missed shots you were talking about….. Imagine if he has a “good” game? 30 pts?

      • COncerned Citizen | January 4, 2012 at 11:39 AM |

JJ, I have seen Domingo play on a number of times, and this seems to become a norm for him. He scored 18 points because he is SI’s only option and had shot every time he touched it. Riordan is not a to team in WCAL, and if Domingo is who he thinks he is, he should have dominated last night.

  12. overall an ugly game to watch – but typical of a wcal rivalry game. does anyone know why bobby arenas did not play for riordan? he was in uniform…

  13. SI needs to get Terrance Roberts Jr more minutes; Everytime i attend an SI game and he enters the game SI plays better. He’s their best defender and their most athletic wing player. The games momentum changes when he plays more minutes.

  14. Trevor Dunbar,Terrance Roberts Jr, ALbert Waters,Noah bull should be getting the ball more and taking more shots.

Aside from Dunbar, none of those players really impressed me in the Sand Dunes Tournament…they need Dunbar, Domingo and Johnson to all play well.

  15. Also, ICA lost to Harker (San Jose) in WBAL Skyline girls soccer 6-1.
