Prep Wrapup: Riordan boys basketball gets first WCAL win on the road against VC

Prep Wrapup is our new feature where we will hopefully provide a broad overview of the previous day’s action. Coaches, to contribute to the Prep Wrapup, please send scores and details the night of the game/event to or call our scores line at (415) 251-0918.

Boys Basketball: Riordan 57, Valley Christian 48

As rough the last couple of days have been for the Crusaders (8-4, 1-1), they found some solace on the court in San Jose.

No Riordan players scored in double figures, but it was a 11-0 run in the second quarter, spurred by six consecutive points from senior guard Roderick Gittens, that gave the Crusaders a lead they would not relinquish.

Gittens, guard D.J. Harvey and forward Graham Gilleran shared the team lead with nine points apiece, while guards Geru Mabrey and Anthony Castillo added eight points each.

Forward Iwunna Ugbaja also contributed offensively with six points, but also played solid defense against Valley Christian’s 6-foot-9 center Cameron Stewart, limiting him to just four second-half points.

Senior guard Nick McGrew had a game-high 16 points for the Warriors (9-3, 0-2) in the loss.

  1. Great job Riordan. Keep up the great work. The off the court issues will resolve themselves. Stay focused on playing ball and you will be just fine!

Great job Crusaders! That’s the way to seperate the drama & take care of buisness! Keep up the hard work!

  3. Good to hear the Crusaders got a win on the road. Way to play against a big. Build off this win Crusaders.

  4. Why isnt Usman Hameed playing? I remember watching him in JVs last year, he was killing it. Coach Buckner needs to open his eyes and realize the talent that this kid possesses.

  5. Hameed is a high flyer with a sweet jump shot. As a junior there may not be many minutes for him unless he steps it up in practice and in his limited oppurtunities. But I agree he could be a great weapon off the bench for riordan

  6. Congrats Crusaders. Looking foward to seeing more Ws on the board.
