Prep Wrapup: Edwards hits buzzer beater to give Mission boys win over Washington

Prep Wrapup is our new feature where we will hopefully provide a broad overview of the previous day’s action. Coaches, to contribute to the Prep Wrapup, please send scores and details the night of the game/event to or call our scores line at (415) 251-0918.

Boys Basketball: Mission 74, Washington 72

The Bears (12-7, 5-0) and Eagles (8-12, 2-3) have had significantly different seasons after meeting in last year’s Academic Athletic Association championship game, but Mission needed a last-second lift to win the rematch.

With the game tied at 72-72 with 8 seconds remaining, Mission sophomore guard Kevin Murray found forward Gione Edwards in the paint, and the senior hit a layup at the buzzer to edge the defending AAA champs.

Edwards and Murray each finished with a team-high 19 points and Edwards added 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season.

Mission senior forward Miles Prescott also had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while the Eagles were led by senior guard Brandon Barnes, who had a game-high 21 points.

Girls Basketball: Mercy 61, Sacred Heart Prep 32

The Skippers (16-0, 2-0) arguably got their best win of the season with a blowout win over a solid Gators (10-5, 1-1) squad, but the formula has remained the same.

Mercy senior guard Mariah Masoli again scored in double digits (she’s done so in 15 of Mercy’s 16 games) with a team-high 17 points and senior forward Courtney Sabahi again had a double-double (her 10th of the season) with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Mercy junior guard Christina Haight also had a double-double, featuring 12 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore forward Nia Ilalio added 15 rebounds.
