Boys Basketball: Urban 49, Marin Academy 42

The Blues (12-8, 4-2) moved into a three-way tie for first place with Lick-Wilmerding and University in the Bay Counties League West with a solid win over the Wildcats (12-7, 3-3) on Friday at USF’s Koret Center.

Marin Academy did not have an answer for Urban junior guard Nate Cohen, who drove through the Wildcats’ defense at-will to score a team-high 20 points, to go along with six rebounds and six assists. Urban forward Julian Matulich also scored a near double-double (12 points, nine rebounds) and junior shooting guard Matt Monges added 12 more points.

Girls Basketball: University 46, Lick-Wilmerding 43

With Convent mowing down BCL West competition, the Red Devils (18-2, 5-1) kept pace, but got a scare from their rivals on Friday at Oracle Arena in Oakland.

University led 36-23 after the third quarter, but the Tigers (6-11, 2-4) cut the Red Devils’ lead to 44-43 with 30 seconds remaining. The Red Devils hit two free throws to push the lead to three points, but Lick’s final buzzer-beating shot didn’t fall.

The Red Devils had a relatively poor offensive performance, but senior center Amelia King had 11 points and freshman guard Katie Lo added 10. Senior forward was Kate Waters was the only Lick player to score in double figures with 10 points.
