Prep Wrapup: Riordan boys basketball hangs with Mitty, but can’t break through

Prep Wrapup is our new feature where we will hopefully provide a broad overview of the previous day’s action. Coaches, to contribute to the Prep Wrapup, please send scores and details the night of the game/event to or call our scores line at (415) 251-0918.

Boys Basketball: Mitty 64, Riordan 56

The Crusaders (9-12, 2-9) hung with the first-place Monarchs (18-3, 10-1) throughout and led midway through the second quarter, but standout junior forward Aaron Gordon buoyed Mitty in the second half.

Gordon scored 12 of the Monarchs’ 16 points in the fourth quarter and scored a game-high 23 points, and the Crusaders could not cut the Mitty lead to a single possession in the second half.

Riordan’s only scorers in double figures were junior guard Geru Mabrey (11 points) and sophomore guard Jiday Ugbaja (10 points).

Girls Basketball: Drew 34, Urban 30

The Dragons (11-9, 1-7) kept their slim BCL West playoff hopes alive with a close win over the Blues (12-11, 2-6).

Drew was led by junior guard Victoria Verdan, who led all scorers with 14 points, including four 3-pointers and two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to seal the win. Drew junior forward Neff Rogers finished with six points and 15 rebounds and Urban got a team-high eight points from junior forward Charlotte Blanc.

Boys Basketball: Urban 45, Drew 31

The Blues (14-8, 6-2) remained in a first-place tie with University in the BCL West with a win over the Dragons (2-17, 0-8) that was never really in question.

Urban opened up a 22-9 lead at the half and cruised to the victory behind a team-high 15 points and five rebounds from junior guard Nate Cohen.
