Behind four goals apiece from seniors Nicole Zelnik and Megan Crayton the Bishop O’Dowd girls lacrosse team cruised to a 16-4 non-league victory over Sacred Heart Cathedral on Monday at Crocker Amazon Playground.
The game marked only the second time the Irish (0-2) have played a game at the varsity level. Their first match was against Berkeley on March 2, which they lost 13-2.
“This is my third year as coach, and of course, the first year on varsity,” said Sacred Heart head coach Courtney Cassinelli. “There is a lot of interest in the sport, and we were able to field [varsity and junior varsity] teams for the first time.”
Sacred Heart got two of its goals from senior captain Michelle Chan, but the brightest spot for the Irish came from goaltender Casey Chew, who had 19 saves.
“She’s an awesome player and only a junior. She played an amazing game,” Cassinelli said of Chew. “She’s our only goalie at this moment, but we are very excited for the future. I felt our defense played well and our offense had some good fast breaks.”
The Irish have ten seniors on the team, including three who first picked up a lacrosse stick this year, but with six juniors and four underclassmen, plus the entire junior varsity team, the program certainly looks to be rising and will continue to grow.
“They are definitely going to be good,” said Bishop O’Dowd head coach Niki Collins. “[If] they keep at it and working on the fundamentals, they will get that interest and build up that program further.”
