Football: St. Ignatius nearly unstoppable on the road against Valley Christian

By Jeremy Balan

SAN JOSE – The West Catholic Athletic League should take notice of what happened in San Jose on Saturday night.

The league should also be advised moving forward – don’t get into a shootout with the St. Ignatius football team this season, because the Wildcats might not miss.

Riding a breakout performance from junior running back Elijah Dale, the visiting Wildcats had an answer for every Valley Christian touchdown in a 42-28 WCAL-opening win that snapped a five-year St. Ignatius winless streak in league openers.

Football: St. Francis’ big plays, lack of running game sink Sacred Heart Cathedral

By Zack Farmer

Four big pass plays doomed the Sacred Heart Cathedral football team in its West Catholic Athletic League opener against St. Francis.

The Lancers scored on pass plays of 28 and 80 yards less than five minutes apart from each other in the second quarter, then on plays of 61 and 83 yards in the third, en route to a 28-0 victory on Saturday at Kezar Stadium.

Football: Riordan’s missed opportunities costly in road loss to Bellarmine

By Jeremy Balan

SAN JOSE – Casual observers that just glance at the score of the Archbishop Riordan High School football team’s 28-10 loss to Bellarmine on Friday at San Jose City College may think the Crusaders are improving.

They would be correct in that assessment. In last season’s meeting between the two teams, the Bells trounced Riordan 56-0 on the Crusaders’ home field.

But what those casual fans won’t know is that the Crusaders (3-1, 0-1) were a few key plays away from being in a position to beat the defending West Catholic Athletic League champs in their league-opening game.

Football: Lincoln routs Balboa to kick off AAA season

By John Baker

Like their coach wanted, the Lincoln High School football team dealt its blows quick and early on Friday night.

The only question in Lincoln head coach Phil Ferrigno’s mind was whether his team could hang on defensively.

“We’ve started well then let teams get back in,” Ferrigno said. “Today they stepped up. We haven’t had that the past couple weeks — it’s been like the Arthur Murray Dance Company.”

Ferrigno had little to worry about, however, as Lincoln waltzed to 47-14 win over Balboa in the AAA opener for both teams at Kezar Stadium.

Football: Washington runs all over Marshall to secure first win

By Lamonte Dewindt

From the opening possession on Friday, it was clear that the formula for the Washington High School football team was going to be to run, run and run some more.

The Eagles struggled to score in non-league play but showed they were not fazed by their early-season struggles in a 41-16 win over visiting Marshall in each team’s Academic Athletic Association opener on Friday.

Game of the Day – Lowell vs. Mission football: Football comes a day early this week, with the defending AAA champs hitting the road to take on the Cardinals, which had the most-impressive win of the non-league season last week when they routed Jefferson 42-0. The game is also a rematch of the AAA semifinal last season, which Mission won 42-24. For live updates on this game, follow us on Twitter at: http://twitter.com/SanFranPreps.
