Games of the Day – Lowell vs. Washington boys soccer: The Eagles just squeaked into the AAA playoffs, then stunned Lincoln in the first round, but will now look to end Lowell’s two year championship streak. Sacred Heart Cathedral vs. Presentation girls volleyball: If the first match between the two teams was any indication, it could be a lengthy night on Ellis Street. The Irish won the regular-season meeting on the road in five games, but will need another win over the Panthers if they want a shot of their first WCAL championship in school history. Boys Soccer: Mission survives in overtime win over SFI to advance to AAA final

By Matthew Snyder

Mission High School head soccer coach Scott Kennedy told his team he had a dream that the Bears lost by one goal against San Francisco International — their opponents in Tuesday afternoon’s Academic Athletic Association semifinal at Boxer Stadium.

That nightmare very nearly became a reality against a fourth-seeded SFI squad intent on pulling off a huge upset over the top-seeded Bears, which were fresh off an undefeated league season, in which they’d outscored opponents 71-10.

Down 2-1 with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, the Bears scored a last-gasp goal to force overtime, then added two more goals in the second extra period to win 4-2 and keep their championship hopes alive.

Girls Golf: Wong wins third straight AAA title, Lincoln earns team championship

By Jeremy Balan

A thick, low-lying fog obscured the final group coming off Fleming Golf Course at the end of the Academic Athletic Association girls golf championship, but one fact was crystal clear.

Lincoln senior Kristi Wong carved out her own spot in AAA history by becoming just the second player to win three straight San Francisco Section individual titles with a 9-over-par 69 on the executive course within Harding Park on Monday.

Football: St. Ignatius can’t erase halftime deficit in WCAL loss to Bellarmine

By Jeremy Balan

With a shot at a West Catholic Athletic League title on the line Saturday, the St. Ignatius football team broke the cardinal rule of playing against Bellarmine.

You can’t play from behind against the Bells.

The Wildcats scored first in a matchup of unbeaten WCAL squads, but allowed the Bells to score 21 unanswered points in the second quarter and did not see the lead again in a 35-28 home loss.

Football: Lowell claims Battle of the Birds with runaway win over Washington

By Jeremy Balan

It would be hard to argue there is a more valuable player in the Academic Athletic Association than Lowell High School senior Michael McCarthy, and his talents were displayed again on Friday night.

Along with handling punting and kicking duties, McCarthy ran for a game-high 86 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, caught a 53-yard touchdown pass and sealed the Cardinals’ 44-14 win over Washington at Kezar Stadium with a fourth-quarter interception.
