Girls Basketball: International 62, Bay 21

The Jaguars (1-0) started their 2012-2013 campaign with an exclamation point, routing their former Bay Counties League Central rivals behind a near triple-double by sophomore guard Shayna Mehta.

Mehta had 12 points, seven assists and eight steals in the win, and International led 47-13 at the half. Juniors Natalie Kelly and Danielle Palmer also scored 10 points apiece, and senior Emilia Omerberg added nine. Palmer also had nine rebounds.

Michelle Chui was the only Bay (0-1) player to finish in double figures, with a team-high 10 points.

It looks like another rough season ahead for Bay, while International is poised to build on their ever-improving program. Bay’s program doesn’t appear to gain traction, with minimal progressive skill development of their players. Perhaps they can take a page out of International’s playbook; which is based on AAU involvement by their players and coaches. Shayna looks to be on course to become a D1 college player. Best of luck to both schools this season.
