Girls Basketball: Urban 51, St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda) 39
The Blues (2-1) bounced back from their first loss of the season with maybe their most significant win in nearly four years on Wednesday at Kezar Pavilion.
Urban defeated the Pilots (0-2), the two-time defending North Coast Section Division V champions, behind a game-high 13 points from freshman point guard CJ Catina. Sophomores Bonnie Barillas and Victoria Velashea added 10 points apiece, while senior Charlotte Blanc had nine points and three key blocks on St. Joseph’s leading scorer, Colorado-bound guard Desiree Harris.
Harris had a team-high 12 points, but after Velashea hit a three-pointer to give the Blues a 9-7 lead late in the first quarter, the Pilots never saw the lead again. Urban led by as many as 16 points in the second half.
Boys Basketball: Palo Alto 69, Mission 42
The Bears (0-4) fell behind 18-2 to the Vikings (2-0) in the first quarter and never recovered in the first-round matchup at the Fukushima Invitational at Independence High School in San Jose.
Senior guard Antoine Porter had a game-high 26 points and six rebounds, but no other Mission player had more than four points. The Bears were also outrebounded 38-26 and 10 Palo Alto players scored.
