Games of the Day – Bay vs. San Domenico girls basketball: Both teams are 4-0 in BCL Central play and have been blowing away league competition. The Breakers have outscored BCL Central teams by an average of nearly 29 points per game, and the Panthers have outscored league opponents 258-41 in four games. Sacred Heart Cathedral vs. Mitty boys basketball: The Irish may not have the same personnel as last season, but are currently in second place in the WCAL, and all three meetings with the Monarchs last year were instant classics. 6-0 at 5-1. Should be nice game to attend. I give the edge to Mitty. Although I see the SHC guards outplaying the Mitty guards, I am not sure SHC has an answer for Gordan inside. Against Riordan, Gordan struggled and was beat up by 3-4 rotating big bodies. SHC doesnt have that group. So I believe Gordan will have a little more success in the paint (and not depend on 50% FT shooting or perimter shooting from his teammates. He does an outstanding job of incorporating his teammates into the game.

On the offensive end, SHC struggles on the perimeter (the only reason Riordan kept it close in their game).

St. Francis always a tough venue to steal a win in. Have not seen St. Francis play this year, but home crowd definately provides edge.

Bellarmine at SI – Argubly the most competitive game of the night. A toss up.

    Have fun all.

It’ll be interesting to see if SHC keeps it close a la Riordan against Mitty or gets blown out a la SI tonight. I predict something in the middle – i.e, ten point Mitty win. I might have to run up to Ellis Street tonight to count how many dunks AG32 throws down tonight. My guess is three as SHC doesn’t have the bodies to match up against him.

Riordan better win on the road against St Francis or I’ll lose what little faith I have in them gelling this year. That being said, I fully expect the Crusaders to do down tonight as they lose by one point again.

SI vs the Bells should be interesting. I give the advantage to SI as I don’t think that the Bellarmine guards will be able to handle the ‘Cats quickness and expect TD10 and AW22 to have huge games tonight. GV21 (Bells) is fun to watch but would expect MB24 to slow him down somewhat.

      • Paul B. says:

AW22 was not @ the game tonight because of a sore throat.

      • Uncle Frank says:

Si down 9 at half and playing lousy wins by 8 at the end 60-52. TD was off his game and was pulled for a large part of the second quarter. No Waters. Still sick with the same flu that kept him out of the Serra game. Didn’t stay for the announcement of point totals, but DMV may have had his high point game with about 20.

        • JJ says:

TD had a “bad” game, but still scores 15

          • Uncle Frank says:

I made sure to say “off” his game, but 15 points is not indicative of his performance as I think he scored 5-7 points at the line in the last 4 minutes. I’ve seen him at least 5 times this year and a lot last year and I feel very comfortable saying he was “off.” (Of course, he was still the best player on the floor.)

The Bells were determined to foul the night away at the end to try to catch up and then, inexplicably, SI kept committing silly fouls when they were up 5-6 in the last 90 seconds. One of the SI coaches said it seemed like the last 2 minutes took one half hour to complete.

        • wcalsf says:

I understand the Bells were less at full strength w 4 of its key players either injured or sick. This flu bug is really spreading. Hope everyone gets well soon! WCAL is a grind!

      • WCAL Fan says:

Riordan got a victory on the road. 53 to 45.

      • IC Stars says:

He had two dunks… Herman Pratt had some good moments against Gordon defensively. Mitty just had more scoring opportunities. Irish hit 16 of 19 from the line. Pratt and Deondre Otis had good games.

  2. JJ says:

Riordan finally wins, SI wins too. SHC was over-matched. #22 for SI is probably still sick. SI needs to win some WCAL games on the road, though, as they have established themselves as a good home team.

  3. Colormepurple says:

    Riordon finishes! 53 — 45 final

  4. Ari Gold says:

Tied 24-24, and Mitty went on a 12-4 run and that’s your game. James didn’t hit those shots he made vs Riordan, but even if he did, SH wouldve probably lost by 4-6. Pratt did an amazing job guarding Gordon. Farrell had a field day with SH double teaming Gordon. O’reilly just didn’t match up well vs Farell. Overall good game, and Gordon is COOL. Talked to him after the game and he is definately a great guy. All business on the court but after the game he’s a pleasant humble guy. Makes it easy to root for him.

    • SF_Mikey says:

Agree re: AG32 great guy! After the game my son and two friends (eleven year hoop fanatics) all ran up to him. He shook hands with each one of them, exchanged a few nice words and patted them on the back when they walked away. The boys were floating on air after the exchange.

      • JJ says:

99% of guys in HS are great guys. If he becomes big at the next level or in the NBA, that’s when they change, although I heard Lebron James had a prima donna attitude in HS. I guess being on the cover of Sports Illustrated in high school can do that to you.

  5. BIGe says:

    Mitty 69 SH 57

    Riordan 53 St Francis 45

  6. IC Stars says:

Boys soccer was a 0-0 tie with Valley Christian and Sacred Heart Cathedral.

  7. E. K. says:

Good win for SI. This is the sort of win that could get them into Open Division.

  8. Crusader 88 says:

So at the halfway point of the WCAL it’s
    Mitty 7-0
    SHC 5-2
    Serra 5-2
    SI 4-3
    Bellarmine 3-4
    Riordan 2-5
    St. Francis 2-5
    Valley Christian 0-7
I think someone will beat Mitty, but they will win the round robin title. It’s possible that Riordan can turn around a couple of those close losses and the city teams could end up anywhere from second thru fifth in the league.

    • JJ says:

Who’s going to beat Mitty from the WCAL? I think they won 20 in a row in the WCAL since last year. They won most of their tough games like at Serra, at Bellarmine, at SHC, at Riordan, etc. The only “tough” road game might be at SI, but they already beat us by 30. It will be very hard for Serra, SHC, Bellarmine, Riordan to beat them in their place.

    • Just some facts says:

Mitty’s win scores/record in first round of WCAL by the scores not dates

Bells lose by 2 pts (65-63)
Riordan loses by 5 pts (57-52)
Serra loses by 10 pts (60-50)
SHC loses by 12 points (69-57)
      St. F loses by 21pts (66-45)
SI loses by 28 pts (71-43)
VC loses by 30 pts (70-40)

PS Mitty has its lowest score at the ARHS game and its highest score at the SI game.

  9. city fan says:

can you please do some more soccer articles? basketball is not the only sport going on right now…

  10. wcalsf says:

Looking forward to Wednesday night’s Riordan-SI rematch. The Forum will be rocking. The BBQ tailgate party for the Riordan alum, Crusader Band and students should make for another great HS hoops atmosphere !
