Upon moving to San Francisco in 2009, it was disheartening to see the lack of prep sports coverage featured in the local media. This inspired me to start a website focused entirely on the 30 high schools in San Francisco that feature athletics.

Those who have become similarly frustrated with the lack of coverage of your local schools can turn to SanFranPreps.com for a consistent and balanced view into the prep sports scene in the city of San Francisco.

  1. St. Ignatius College Prep and Sacred Heart Cathedral, cross-town rivals, will play baseball this Saturday (March 18, 2017) at the University of San Francisco’s Dante Benedetti field in the annual Bruce-Mahoney game. This is the 124th meeting of these schools in a rivalry that dates back to 1893, and is the oldest high school athletic rivalry west of the Mississippi river.

“St. Patrick’s Day in 1893 marked the start of this tradition when the two schools met in Central Park at Eighth and Market Streets for a rugby game; a game won by Sacred Heart, 14-4. Over the years that rivalry has flourished as the schools competed in a variety of sports in three successive leagues. The Bruce-Mahoney Memorial Trophy is symbolic of the SI-SH rivalry. Established in 1947, it is awarded to the school which is victorious in league competition in two out of the three major sports each year: football, basketball, and baseball.” (siprep.org).

SI has already secured the trophy this year, with wins over SHC in football and basketball. Nevertheless, the passion around Saturday’s baseball game will be high, with a capacity crowd expected at USF’s Dante Benedetti diamond (seats 2,000).
Both teams are off to a great start this season ( SHC – 8-1 overall, and 0-1 in WCAL League Play). (SI – 5-3 overall, and 1-0 in WCAL League play).
