Boys Basketball: Ferrari’s clutch shot gives Riordan slim win over Bellarmine

Boys Basketball: Ferrari’s clutch shot gives Riordan slim win over Bellarmine

By Jeremy Balan

The highlight of Frankie Ferrari’s early Riordan basketball career came on a night where he couldn’t buy a bucket for the first 31 minutes and 55 seconds of game time against Bellarmine.

After starting the game 0-of-7 from the field, Ferrari showed no hesitation with the game tied in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.

Against a straight-forward, man-to-man defense, the junior shooting guard took the ball up the court, bluffed a drive to create space, then pulled up and drained a three-pointer with 5 seconds remaining to give Riordan a 47-44 West Catholic Athletic League win over the Bells at Crusader Forum on Saturday night.

Girls Basketball: Lowell continues to dominate AAA with rout of Washington

By Jeremy Balan

The Lowell girls basketball dynasty – and there’s no doubt that’s what it is – is showing no signs of ending any time soon.

The Cardinals’ quest for their seventh Academic Athletic Association title in eight years has been far from bumpy and the trend continued on Friday night with a 70-31 win over rival Washington at Kezar Pavilion.

By Zack Farmer

After a disappointing loss to Lick-Wilmerding on Tuesday, the University boys basketball team fell behind early against visiting Urban on Friday, but turned up its defensive pressure in the second and third quarters to rally and pull away in 63-47 a win.

Boys Basketball: Galileo stuns Lincoln to pull into first-place tie

By Jeremy Balan

The public-school gyms in San Francisco are more utilitarian than they are glamorous and that makes winning on the road that much tougher in the Academic Athletic Association.

The Lincoln boys basketball team became the second league opponent in just over a week to find out how hard it is to win at Galileo on Thursday, dropping their first AAA game of the season to the Lions 49-48 in the Marina District.

Boys Basketball: Sacred Heart Cathedral back on track after win over St. Ignatius

Boys Basketball: Sacred Heart Cathedral back on track after win over St. Ignatius

By Jeremy Balan

It’s safe to say the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys basketball team’s first quarter against Bellarmine on Saturday was the low point of its season.

The Irish trailed 32-3 after the opening quarter against the Bells, en route to their third straight West Catholic Athletic League loss, but more importantly, lost their confidence.

It may not be all back, but the Irish got a boost to that confidence on Wednesday by defeating rival St. Ignatius 59-51 on the road.

Girls Basketball: Lowell shows no signs of fatigue in rout of Galileo

By John Baker

Not only has Lowell’s girls basketball team played three games in five days, including back-to-back Academic Athletic Association tilts on Monday and Tuesday, but it has shown few signs of fatigue.

In fact, the Cardinals seem to be getting stronger the more often they play.

Tuesday night’s 61-26 victory over Galileo showed Lowell at its best. The Cardinals executed all aspects of their game with the self-confidence and energy of a well-rested squad.
