Baseball: Balboa takes out Lowell again in AAA semifinals behind Arnold’s shutout

Baseball: Balboa takes out Lowell again in AAA semifinals behind Arnold’s shutout

By Jeremy Balan On a scorecard, Balboa High School senior Alex Arnold’s groundout to second base in the second inning of the Academic Athletic Association baseball semifinals looks routine, but it’s the kind of groundout that makes coaches gush. It was also the difference in Balboa’s 1-0 upset win over Lowell on Thursday at Big [...]

Baseball: Marshall stuns Galileo to claim first playoff win in school history

Baseball: Marshall stuns Galileo to claim first playoff win in school history

By Jeremy Balan

Marshall High School head baseball coach Gerald Rankin has said it for years.

All he wants for his players is the respect of the rest of the Academic Athletic Association, but the Phoenix had to earn it.

With a 3-2 win over Galileo on Tuesday at Moscone Recreation Center, Marshall became the first team from the B Division to defeat an A Division squad in postseason play since the AAA employed a tiered-division format in 2008.

Baseball: Burton plays small ball to beat Mission and secure playoff spot

Baseball: Burton plays small ball to beat Mission and secure playoff spot

By Jeremy Balan

Hits weren’t plentiful in the Academic Athletic Association play-in game between Burton High School and Mission on Monday at Silver Terrace Playground, so the Pumas had to get creative.

Trailing 1-0 with just one hit through three innings, Burton right fielder Thomas Tsang worked a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Then Burton’s No. 4 hitter, Austin Perez, put a picture-perfect bunt single down the third-base line to score Tsang and shift the momentum in a 6-2 Burton win, which gives the Pumas their first playoff berth since 2008.

Baseball: Washington’s eight-run fifth inning too much for Lowell to overcome

Baseball: Washington’s eight-run fifth inning too much for Lowell to overcome

By Jeremy Balan

Until further notice, Washington High School is still the team to beat in Academic Athletic Association baseball.

In a showdown of undefeated teams, the defending AAA champs headed into the top of the fifth inning trailing Lowell 4-3, but scored eight runs in the fifth en route to a 11-5 win on Wednesday at Big Rec, sealing the top seed in the league playoffs.

Baseball: Sacred Heart Cathedral’s bats show up early in road win over Riordan

Baseball: Sacred Heart Cathedral’s bats show up early in road win over Riordan

By Jeremy Balan

Like so many baseball teams in The City, the path to success for Sacred Heart Cathedral starts in the batter’s box.

The Irish bats showed up early and cranked out 12 hits to score their highest run total of the West Catholic Athletic League season in a 7-2 win on the road against Riordan.

Six of the Irish hits came with runners in scoring position and they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and led 6-1 in the top of the third.

By Jeremy Balan

The University High School baseball team scored four unanswered runs in the final 3 1/2 innings against Stuart Hall on Friday at Moscone Recreation Center, but the game was decided well before then.

The Red Devils spotted the defending Bay Counties League West champions nine runs in the first four innings, several off five University errors, and Stuart Hall cruised to a 9-4 win.

Baseball: Nelson leads Galileo to postseason-clinching win over Lincoln

Baseball: Nelson leads Galileo to postseason-clinching win over Lincoln

By Jeremy Balan

To the likely chagrin of the rest of the Academic Athletic Association, Galileo’s Kyle Nelson looked like his big brother on Thursday.

Nelson, a skinny sophomore left-hander, doesn’t physically look like former two-time AAA Player of the Year Dylan Nelson in form or stature yet, but he showed he can take over a game on the mound and at the plate, just like his big bro, in a 7-4 win over Lincoln at Moscone Recreation Center.
