Boys Basketball: University takes control of BCL West with win over Urban

After a disappointing loss to Lick-Wilmerding on Tuesday, the University boys basketball team fell behind early against visiting Urban on Friday, but turned up its defensive pressure in the second and third quarters to rally and pull away in 63-47 a win.
The win broke a first-place tie between the two teams in the Bay Counties League West and put the Red Devils all alone at the top of the league with two games remaining.
Girls Basketball: Mehta and Palmer lead International to home win over Convent

At times during Friday’s Bay Counties League West game between the International and Convent girls basketball teams, Jaguars players Shayna Mehta and Danielle Palmer were simply unguardable.
Palmer poured in 12 first-quarter points and Mehta followed with 15 points in the second quarter, but International weathered severe offensive stagnation and a fierce Convent comeback in the second half before they finished strongly in a 59-43 home victory.

The gym at Stuart Hall is so far underground on the compact campus that it has been nicknamed “The Dungeon” by students.
But it was University boys basketball team that trapped Stuart Hall on Wednesday night, defeating the host Knights 61-43 in a Bay Counties League West play to remain tied for first place in the league standings.

The final margin was only 13 points, but the University boys basketball team left a larger impression on Urban after the Red Devils’ 80-67 Bay Counties League West win on Wednesday night at Kezar Pavilion.
“They pretty much dominated us for most of the game,” said Urban head coach Joe Skiffer. “We didn’t have enough fight [or] enough discipline to beat that team tonight.”

Trailing by 12 points to Stuart Hall at halftime, Lick-Wilmerding head boys basketball coach Eliot Smith feared that the game might end in a rout.
But the Tigers mounted a second-half comeback on the road, turning the game into a nail-biter that featured four ties, six lead changes and one overtime period before the Knights recovered to secure a 55-52 Bay Counties League West victory on Tuesday night.

OAKLAND – Like the rest of the University boys basketball team, Will Carroll struggled in the second quarter against Lick-Wilmerding in their annual rivalry game at Oracle Arena.
It was what Carroll did outside of that quarter, however, that pushed the Red Devils to a 59-41 Bay Counties League West win on Friday.

Shayna Mehta, Natalie Kelly, and Danielle Palmer did almost all of the scoring in the International girls basketball team’s 72-61 Bay Counties League West win over Urban on Thursday at Kezar Pavilion.
Mehta scored a game-high 32 points, Kelly added 24 and Palmer had 12, as the Jaguars (14-2, 2-0) never trailed in the game and mostly led by double digits throughout, despite playing only seven girls due to the absence of three players that usually get substantial playing time.
Girls Volleyball: Convent mounts comeback to best International in BCL West semis

Despite dropping the first two games of its Bay Counties League West semifinal match, Convent of the Sacred Heart High School’s girls volleyball team stormed back to beat International 23-25, 15-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-11 on Thursday at Lick-Wilmerding High School.

Heading into Wednesday’s Bay Counties League West semifinal game against International High School at the Crocker Amazon Soccer Fields, University’s boys soccer team had not played for eight days.
The extended rest turned into rust and it almost cost the sluggish Red Devils dearly.
University struggled to impose its passing game against the Jaguars, but goals from Freddy Yao and Josiah Corbus offset a late consolation goal from International defender Jose Garduno and sent the Red Devils to Friday night’s league championship game with a 2-1 victory.

With time winding down and the score between the University High School and International boys soccer teams knotted in a scoreless tie, freshman midfielder Patrick Dowd came through in the 71st minute to score the game-winning goal in a the Red Devils’ 1-0 Bay Counties League West victory on Wednesday at the Crocker Amazon Soccer Fields.
