Boys Basketball: University takes control of BCL West with win over Urban
By Zack Farmer
After a disappointing loss to Lick-Wilmerding on Tuesday, the University boys basketball team fell behind early against visiting Urban on Friday, but turned up its defensive pressure in the second and third quarters to rally and pull away in 63-47 a win.
The win broke a first-place tie between the two teams in the Bay Counties League West and put the Red Devils all alone at the top of the league with two games remaining.
Boys Basketball: Galileo stuns Lincoln to pull into first-place tie
By Jeremy Balan
The public-school gyms in San Francisco are more utilitarian than they are glamorous and that makes winning on the road that much tougher in the Academic Athletic Association.
The Lincoln boys basketball team became the second league opponent in just over a week to find out how hard it is to win at Galileo on Thursday, dropping their first AAA game of the season to the Lions 49-48 in the Marina District.
Boys Basketball: Sacred Heart Cathedral back on track after win over St. Ignatius
By Jeremy Balan
It’s safe to say the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys basketball team’s first quarter against Bellarmine on Saturday was the low point of its season.
The Irish trailed 32-3 after the opening quarter against the Bells, en route to their third straight West Catholic Athletic League loss, but more importantly, lost their confidence.
It may not be all back, but the Irish got a boost to that confidence on Wednesday by defeating rival St. Ignatius 59-51 on the road.

Boys Basketball: Gordon and Mitty take down St. Ignatius in final trip to San Francisco
By Jeremy Balan
Mitty phenom Aaron Gordon’s last trip to San Francisco in his high school career ended with him being mobbed by fans – and they were all wearing red and blue.
After Gordon scored 20 points, took in 10 rebounds and led the Monarchs to a 57-44 win at St. Ignatius on Saturday night, the same fans that gleefully cheered every time he missed a shot or free throw surrounded the state’s top recruit.
Boys Basketball: Lincoln only remaining AAA unbeaten after rout of Lowell
By Jeremy Balan
The 16 minutes didn’t come sequentially, but the Lowell boys basketball team essentially scored a single point in a half against Lincoln on Friday night.
And that’s no way to beat the Academic Athletic Association’s best team.
In the first and third quarters, the Cardinals scored just one point combined and shot 0-of-21 from the floor, allowing the Mustangs to coast to a 48-21 home win.
Boys Basketball: St. Ignatius’ road woes continue in loss to Riordan
By Jeremy Balan
It’s only a 4-mile drive from the Sunset to Phelan Avenue, but the St. Ignatius boys basketball team’s matchup with Riordan on Wednesday night was still a road game in the West Catholic Athletic League – and the Wildcats have been far from road warriors this season.
St. Ignatius struggled offensively all night at Crusader Forum, had a season-low point total and dropped to 0-4 on the road in league play after a 42-33 Riordan win.
Boys Basketball: University stays in first place with road win over Stuart Hall
By John Baker
The gym at Stuart Hall is so far underground on the compact campus that it has been nicknamed “The Dungeon” by students.
But it was University boys basketball team that trapped Stuart Hall on Wednesday night, defeating the host Knights 61-43 in a Bay Counties League West play to remain tied for first place in the league standings.
Boys Basketball: Gateway takes control of BCL Central with win over Bay
By Jeremy Balan
The Bay boys basketball team largely accomplished its main objective on Tuesday against Gateway by limiting the Gators’ standout frontcourt with a stingy 2-3 zone, but the Breakers couldn’t limit it on defense.
The Gators held Bay to 26 percent shooting from the floor, and combined with 11 blocks, limited the Breakers to a season-low point total in their 50-34 Bay Counties League Central win at Letterman Gym.
