Road to the State Championship: Taylor Johns’ high-flying impact
By Jeremy Balan
On the scoreboard, an ordinary jump shot and an emphatic dunk are both worth two points, but their impact on a game can be entirely different.
The spark and momentum gained from a dunk, especially in high school basketball, can be the difference between winning and losing. Sacred Heart Cathedral senior forward Taylor Johns has provided that spark on so many occasions this season.
Road to the State Championship: Barbour’s unwavering presence
Editor’s note: This is the first in a weeklong series of stories on the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys basketball team leading up to Saturday’s state championship game.
By Jeremy Balan
When Sacred Heart Cathedral was down by double digits early against Bishop O’Dowd in the Northern California Division III boys basketball championship game, there was no sign of panic from the Irish players.
They emulate their coach, Darrell Barbour, whose expression and demeanor on the sideline does not change whether the Irish are blowing an opponent out by 30 points or trailing by 20.
Boys Basketball: Sacred Heart Cathedral wins NorCal D-III title over Bishop O’Dowd
By Jeremy Balan SACRAMENTO – Unlike so many playoff games this season, Sacred Heart Cathedral shooting guard Tyler Petroni did not light up the scoreboard against Bishop O’Dowd on Saturday. The shots weren’t falling for Petroni, but with the game on the line and less than a minute remaining, the senior made a play to [...]

Boys Basketball: Sacred Heart Cathedral a step away from state title game
By Jeremy Balan
It’s no surprise that the Sacred Heart Cathedral and Bishop O’Dowd boys basketball teams are meeting in the California Interscholastic Federation Division III Northern California regional championship game on Saturday at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento.
Since the season tipped off, the two teams have been tabbed as the best in the region’s division and neither was truly challenged in the prior two rounds of the tournament.
Boys Basketball: Sacred Heart Cathedral rolls over Center in NorCal semifinals
By Jeremy Balan
If its blowout win over Miramonte in the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Division III state playoffs on Saturday didn’t validate the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys basketball team’s top seed, its performance on Tuesday sure did.
Sacred Heart played one of its sloppiest games of the season, committing 21 turnovers, but still coasted to a 69-51 win over visiting Center of Antelope in the Northern California regional semifinals.

Boys Basketball: Sacred Heart fueled by Johns in state-tourney win over Miramonte
By Jeremy Balan
For a quarter, the Miramonte boys basketball team appeared to present a challenge for top-seeded Sacred Heart Cathedral in the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Division III state playoffs on Saturday night.
That’s when Sacred Heart forward Taylor Johns turned the game into his own personal highlight reel.
The standout senior scored a game-high 26 points, with five emphatic dunks, to spark the Irish offense in a runaway 90-57 win over the visiting Matadors.

State Tournament Roundup: Mission, Marshall, University girls fall in first round
The Mission High School boys basketball team found much of its success this season outrunning opponents, but the Bears encountered a team that could more than keep up in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation Division III state playoffs.
Twelfth-seeded Center High School of Antelope consistently beat the Mission full-court pressure defense with ease to score easy buckets, shot just over 62 percent from the floor and scored a staggering 58 points in the paint to take down the fifth-seeded Bears on Wednesday at Kezar Pavilion.
Boys Basketball: Mah’s last-second layup pushes University to state-tourney win
By Jeremy Balan
University guard Chris Mah was not having a game on Wednesday at Kezar Pavilion.
The junior, who has played such a key role for the Red Devils this season, missed his first ten shots from the floor and didn’t score until late in the third quarter against Ripon Christian.
But fate smiled upon Mah in the fourth quarter and he came through to give the Red Devils to a 79-77 win in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation Division V boys basketball state playoffs.
