Football: St. Ignatius gets NorCal bid, will take on Granite Bay in Division I bowl

By Jeremy Balan

There were several extended discussions during the meeting of the 10 CIF section commissioners to decide the regional football championship matchups on Sunday, but one didn’t even get a vote.

Due to the committee’s selection of De La Salle and Folsom for the Northern California Open Division championship, Granite Bay and St. Ignatius were the only eligible teams left to fill the two slots for the Division game.

Granite Bay, the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champion, and the Wildcats, the Central Coast Section Open Division champion, will face off in the Division I NorCal title game on Friday night at Sacramento State University.

As first reported by Jimmy Durkin of the Bay Area News Group, the California Interscholastic Federation’s Federated Council approved three proposals that will not only have a significant impact on high school sports in San Francisco, but in the entire state.

Here is a rundown of the three changes and how they affect San Francisco programs specifically.

Girls Golf: St. Ignatius runs into trouble again in NorCal championship

By Jeremy Balan

As impressive as the St. Ignatius girls golf team has been in recent history, the Wildcats extended a daunting streak in the CIF NorCal Championship on Monday at Stanford University Golf Course.

The four-time defending Central Coast Section and 10-time defending West Catholic Athletic League champions fell short of the state championships for the fourth consecutive year, finishing fifth out of 12 teams with a combined score of 434.

Boys Basketball: University’s run ends at the hands of SJND in NorCal final

By Jeremy Balan

FOLSOM — The tide was turning. You could feel it.

After trailing by as much as 20 points in the third quarter, the University boys’ basketball team ended the period on an 8-0 run and cut the St. Joseph Notre Dame of Alameda lead to 40-31.

But the Pilots responded with the form of a true champion, pulling away for a 61-43 win in the CIF Northern California Division V championship on Saturday at Folsom High School.

Boys Basketball: University comfortable with underdog role in NorCal final

By Jeremy Balan

Coming into this season, University looked to be a solid contender for the Division V state championship, but one thing was clear then, and became crystal-clear after the CIF North Coast Section title game — the state title goes through St. Joseph Notre Dame.

The Red Devils got a taste of just how good St. Joseph can be with a 63-32 loss in the NCS final, but will get a chance at redemption in the Northern California championship game on Saturday at Folsom High School.

Girls Basketball: O’Dowd’s size inside too much for St. Ignatius in NorCal semis

By Mitch Stephens

With his team down nine points at halftime, St. Ignatius head coach Mike Mulkerinns was resigned to the fact his Wildcats were in over their heads.

Anyone watching the trees of host Bishop O’Dowd could see that.

With a front-line of 6-foot-3, 6-3 and 6-1, the Dragons dwarfed St. Ignatius, which doesn’t have a player taller than 5-10 on its roster.

The visiting Wildcats cut the lead to two in the third quarter, but simply couldn’t get over the hump, losing 48-39 in the CIF Northern California Division III semifinals

Boys Basketball: University threes the difference against Pinewood in NorCal semis

By Jeremy Balan

LOS ALTOS HILLS — It’s just one point.

Every basketball fan knows this simple fact and it may seem to be basic math, but that’s the only difference between a layup and a shot from beyond the three-point arc.

But when you’re trading baskets with University High School, those points can add up.

Pinewood matched the visiting Red Devils’ run-and-gun pace in the CIF Division V Northern California semifinals, but while the Panthers ruled the paint, University connected on 13 three-pointers in an 81-75 win.

Boys Basketball: University routs Liberty Christian in state tournament

By Josh Levine

University High School had a chip on its shoulder Thursday night when they faced off against Liberty Christian of Redding in the CIF Division V state championship boys basketball tournament.

After losing 63-32 on Friday to St. Joseph Notre Dame in the CIF-North Coast Section final, the Red Devils came out and shot 49 percent from the field and dominated visiting Liberty Christian in a 90-55 win at Kezar Pavilion.

Girls Basketball: Late run can’t save Sacred Heart in state tourney loss to Campo

By Jeremy Balan

A 10-0 run in the fourth quarter nearly erased what was a 16-point deficit, but it wasn’t enough for Sacred Heart Cathedral to overcome a poor second-quarter shooting performance in a 63-57 loss to visiting Campolindo of Moraga in the second round of the CIF Division III state championship girls basketball tournament on Thursday.

The Irish (16-13) run cut the Campolindo lead to 58-55 with 2:22 remaining in the fourth, but the Cougars (25-6) responded with four straight points of their own to hold off the comeback bid.
