Cross Country: University girls capture 10th state championship

By Mitch Stephens

Jim Tracy and the University girls cross country team captured their on-going record 10th Division V state championship and fourth in a row Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Though it was University’s highest winning total with 114 points (low score is best in cross country) over Thacher of Ojai (124), Lick-Wilmerding (130) and Branson of Ross (141), Tracy was ecstatic.

Under clear, calm and cool conditions, the Red Devils were paced by senior Jennie Callan, who took 10th while covering the rolling 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 6 seconds, well back of repeat individual winner Julia Maxwell (17:26).

Girls Volleyball: Convent advances in NCS playoffs with win over International

By Jeremy Balan

Convent of the Sacred Heart High School’s girls volleyball team didn’t have an answer for the powerful attacks from standout International freshman outside hitter Michelle Gajdka in the North Coast Section Division V playoffs on Wednesday, but didn’t need one.

The fifth-seeded Cubs found their path to victory when Gajdka was stuck in the back row, most crucially in the final game of their 25-22, 25-20, 25-27, 25-12 win on Wednesday at Convent.

State Tournament Roundup: Mission, Marshall, University girls fall in first round

The Mission High School boys basketball team found much of its success this season outrunning opponents, but the Bears encountered a team that could more than keep up in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation Division III state playoffs.

Twelfth-seeded Center High School of Antelope consistently beat the Mission full-court pressure defense with ease to score easy buckets, shot just over 62 percent from the floor and scored a staggering 58 points in the paint to take down the fifth-seeded Bears on Wednesday at Kezar Pavilion.

By Bonta Hill

Playing in its first state playoff game in the history of the girls basketball program, International High School looked like a group that had been there before.

The the eighth-seeded Jaguars pounced on visiting Portola High School early, scoring the game’s first nine points en route to a 71-25 blowout victory over the ninth-seeded Tigers in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation Division V state playoffs on Wednesday.

Boys Basketball: Mah’s last-second layup pushes University to state-tourney win

By Jeremy Balan

University guard Chris Mah was not having a game on Wednesday at Kezar Pavilion.

The junior, who has played such a key role for the Red Devils this season, missed his first ten shots from the floor and didn’t score until late in the third quarter against Ripon Christian.

But fate smiled upon Mah in the fourth quarter and he came through to give the Red Devils to a 79-77 win in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation Division V boys basketball state playoffs.

Girls Basketball: International’s young guns the difference in NCS semifinals

By Josh Levine

Much of International High School’s recent success can be attributed to senior captain Denia Ebersole, but it was the play of two underclassmen that stole the show on Wednesday night.

Sophomore guard Natalie Kelly scored 24 points and freshman guard Shayna Mehta added 19 to lead the sixth-seeded Jaguars to a dominant 62-39 win over visiting San Domenico of San Anselmo in the North Coast Section Division V semifinals.
