Girls Basketball: Burton rides Dela Cruz’s hot hand to beat ICA

By Aidan Fitzsimon

Behind a game-high 26 points from junior guard Alyssa Dela Cruz the Burton girls basketball team cruised to a 59-46 non-league win on the road against Immaculate Conception Academy on Wednesday.

The Pumas (4-1) got 20 points from Dela Cruz in the first half, including 14 in the second quarter, and had a strong contribution from junior Veronica Henry, who added 14 points.

Girls Basketball: Drew hands Immaculate Conception first loss

By Matthew Snyder

Drew senior guard and team captain Victoria Verdan didn’t start in the Dragon’s 54-32 non-league win over Immaculate Conception on Monday after missing Saturday’s practice.

Verdan didn’t simply skip out on the session. She was undergoing tests to find out if she had suffered a concussion during Drew’s game against University the night before.

Despite the circumstances, first-year Drew head coach Nnenne Okereke has an iron-clad rule that if you miss practice, you can’t start the next game.

When Verdan finally entered the game, she wasted little time establishing herself as a game-changing presence.

Games of the day – Galileo vs. Washington girls basketball: Both teams are 5-1 in AAA play and if the Lions want to stay within reach of Lowell in the Neff Division, a win over the Eagles is essential. Lick-Wilmerding vs. Urban boys basketball: Many thought the Tigers had a shot at being in first place in the BCL West at this point in the season, but the Blues are a bit of a surprise. The winner of this game will likely remain in a first-place tie with University. St. Ignatius vs. Sacred Heart Cathedral girls basketball: The Wildcats are riding high after their best win of the season over Mitty last week, but it would be unwise to overlook the Irish, which stand in third place in the WCAL standings.
