Boys Soccer: University takes Marin Academy to OT, but falls in BCL West title game

By Matthew Snyder

For most of Friday night’s Bay Counties League West boys soccer championship at Kimbell Playground, University High School senior goalkeeper Jack Wilson got the better of Marin Academy’s standout attacking midfielder Eloi Vasquez.

Vasquez tested Wilson with three shots spread out during a game that went to two overtimes. Each time, Wilson, who began the season as a forward before being shifted to goalkeeper, responded with a brilliant save.

But his fourth attempt proved to be the difference in the Wildcats’ 2-1 win.

Heading into Wednesday’s Bay Counties League West semifinal game against International High School at the Crocker Amazon Soccer Fields, University’s boys soccer team had not played for eight days.

The extended rest turned into rust and it almost cost the sluggish Red Devils dearly.

University struggled to impose its passing game against the Jaguars, but goals from Freddy Yao and Josiah Corbus offset a late consolation goal from International defender Jose Garduno and sent the Red Devils to Friday night’s league championship game with a 2-1 victory.

Boys Soccer: Marin Academy hands International first BCL West loss

By Matthew Snyder

International High School and Marin Academy entered Wednesday’s boys soccer game at the Crocker Amazon Soccer Fields with matching undefeated records atop the Bay Counties League West, but the similarities ended there.

Marin Academy has been the preeminent force in the BCL West for years now, winning the past four league titles, while International is in its debut campaign in the league.

That inexperience showed against the Wildcats, who pinned the Jaguars in their own half on the way to a 5-0 victory, in which, they missed a penalty shot and twice saw shots carom off the post.

The Blues rallied from a 6-2 deficit, capped by a bases-loaded, walk-off single from Ong in the eighth inning to beat Marin Academy 7-6 in the Bay Counties League West championship game.
