Football: St. Ignatius gets NorCal bid, will take on Granite Bay in Division I bowl

By Jeremy Balan

There were several extended discussions during the meeting of the 10 CIF section commissioners to decide the regional football championship matchups on Sunday, but one didn’t even get a vote.

Due to the committee’s selection of De La Salle and Folsom for the Northern California Open Division championship, Granite Bay and St. Ignatius were the only eligible teams left to fill the two slots for the Division game.

Granite Bay, the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champion, and the Wildcats, the Central Coast Section Open Division champion, will face off in the Division I NorCal title game on Friday night at Sacramento State University.

Field Hockey: St. Ignatius jumps out early to rout Marin Catholic

By Matthew Snyder

PACIFICA – Mired in a difficult start to the season, in which the St. Ignatius field hockey team lost its first three games without scoring a goal, head coach Maisa Badawy decided to devote significant portions of recent practices toward drills focused on finishing scoring opportunities.

That extra work paid off on a blustery Monday afternoon at Fairmont Park, where the Wildcats scored early and often en route to a thorough 9-0 non-league victory over visiting Marin Catholic of Kentfield.

Football: St. Ignatius can’t hold off Marin Catholic in season-opener

By Jeremy Balan

KENTFIELD – For the second season in a row, the St. Ignatius football team let a win over Marin Catholic slip through its fingers, but on Saturday it wasn’t just a figurative description of what happened in Marin County.

The St. Ignatius receiving corps dropped seven passes, two of which resulted in interceptions, and allowed Marin Catholic to score 21 unanswered points in the second half to lose 28-21.

Girls Basketball: Mercy’s season ends with overtime loss to Marin Catholic

By Josh Levine

It took an extra 4 minutes of game time, but Mercy High School’s girls basketball team saw its season end in a 45-44 overtime loss to visiting Marin Catholic in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation Division IV state playoffs on Wednesday.

Mercy junior guard Christina Haight had a chance to win the game for the sixth-seed Skippers (26-4) with a half-court heave at the buzzer in overtime, but the 11th-seed Wildcats (23-8) held on as Haight’s shot rolled off the rim.
