Football: Menlo routs Mission to hand Bears first loss

By Zack Farmer

After narrowly defeating the Mission High School football team last season, Menlo School of Atherton jumped all over the Bears in the first quarter on Saturday, scoring 28 unanswered points, and coasted to a 56-24 win at Kezar Stadium.

Mission (1-1) dropped last year’s matchup 14-12 but Menlo’s potent passing attack proved even more of a problem this time around.

Football Game of the Week: Campolindo and Sacred Heart Cathedral are kindred spirits

By Jeremy Balan

The Sacred Heart Cathedral football team’s matchup against Campolindo this week will likely be its toughest test of the non-league season, but will also present a clash of kindred spirits.

A year ago, Campolindo was in the same spot the Irish are in now, early in the 2012 season.

Picked to finish last in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League, the Cougars went 14-0 and beat Marin Catholic in the North Coast Section Division III championship game, before falling to Washington Union of Fresno in the D-III state championship game.

Now, the Irish have been picked last by the West Catholic Athletic League coaches in their preseason poll, but surprised many when they dispatched Terra Nova with relative ease in their opener, a team that was ranked locally and regionally.

Girls Basketball: Edelman’s buzzer beater sinks Mercy in WBAL tourney championship

By Jeremy Balan

PALO ALTO – It’s not hard to spot the Menlo School girls basketball team’s biggest advantage.

At 6-foot-4, Menlo junior center Drew Edelman stands 5 inches taller than any Mercy players and that disparity proved fatal for the Skippers on Saturday in the West Bay Athletic League tournament championship game at Castilleja School.

With Mercy clinging to a 52-51 late in the fourth quarter, Edelman followed her own miss at the buzzer to give the Knights a 53-52 win.
