Girls Basketball: Edelman’s buzzer beater sinks Mercy in WBAL tourney championship

PALO ALTO – It’s not hard to spot the Menlo School girls basketball team’s biggest advantage.

At 6-foot-4, Menlo junior center Drew Edelman stands 5 inches taller than any Mercy players and that disparity proved fatal for the Skippers on Saturday in the West Bay Athletic League tournament championship game at Castilleja School.

With Mercy clinging to a 52-51 late in the fourth quarter, Edelman followed her own miss at the buzzer to give the Knights a 53-52 win.

Girls Basketball: Mercy surges in third quarter to take down Menlo

Mercy High School forwards Courtney Sabahi and Nia Ilalio combined for 37 points and held standout Menlo center Drew Edelman to 19 points in the Skippers’ 70-57 victory over the visiting Knights on Friday night.

With the win, the Skippers (20-1, 6-1) clinched at least a share of the Foothill Division regular-season championship in the West Bay Athletic League.
