Game of the day – Jewish Community vs. Trinity Christian basketball: The Wolves (9-11) made their first CCS playoff appearance in school history last season and proved they could win, before falling to eventual-champion Pinewood. This season, they open the tournament against Trinity Christian (16-3), the second-place finisher in the Coastal League. Games of the day – Lick-Wilmerding vs. Gateway boys basketball: Gateway will look to knock off host Lick in the first round of the Lick Tournament. Lowell vs. Washington boys basketball: The AAA rivals are meeting in the second round of Jefferson’s tournament with a shot at the championship game. Washington won the tournament last season. St. Ignatius vs. Sheldon boys basketball: The Wildcats are still without standout junior Stephen Domingo, but will start their year in one of the toughest early-season tournaments in Northern California. Football: Nelson comes of age in Galileo’s win over Mills

Hours before his first ever varsity game, Galileo Academy sophomore quarterback Kyle Nelson was a nervous wreck in class.

Down 15-6 to Mills High School of Millbrae midway through the second quarter, watching his teammate, fellow sophomore Ronzel Fox, leave the game due to an unspecified injury, Nelson was forced to grow up in a hurry.

And did he ever, leading the Lions to 22 unanswered points en route to a 28-15 victory over Mills in the season opener for both teams.
