University High School simply could not stop St. Joseph Notre Dame’s Phoebe Grunt in the North Coast Section Division V girls volleyball semifinals on Wednesday night.

So the Red Devils did their damage when Grunt couldn’t hurt them.

Girls Volleyball: University sweeps College Prep to advance to NCS semifinals

College Prep of Oakland showed glimpses of promise against University in the second round of the North Coast Section Division V playoffs on Saturday night.

Once the Red Devils got going, however, College Prep couldn’t stop the bleeding.

In each game of its 25-9, 25-22, 25-14 win over the visiting Cougars, second-seeded University went on multiple extended runs and capitalized on frequent College Prep mistakes.

Games of the day – Lowell vs. Lincoln boys soccer: The Cardinals will are looking for their second-consecutive AAA title and second-consecutive undefeated season. Lowell took the first meeting between the two teams 2-0. University vs. College Prep girls volleyball: Seeking another trip to the NCS Division V championship game, University cruised to a first-round win over Bay. Girls Volleyball: Convent sweeps BCL West rival Drew in NCS playoffs

Convent of the Sacred Heart High School and Drew split their two regular-season meetings this season, but in the third matchup it was all Cubs.

Fifth-seeded Convent swept the visiting Dragons 25-19, 25-16, 25-15 on Wednesday in the first round of the North Coast Section Division V playoffs.

University vs. Branson boys soccer: The Red Devils already went up to the College of Marin this season and beat Branson 1-0 in non-league play, but the win was far from convincing. The Red Devils will look for an upset again in the NCS semifinals. Convent vs. Drew girls volleyball: The BCL West rivals will meet for the third time this season. The Cubs took both of the two league matches in four games The two teams split their two regular-season league meetings. Sacred Heart Cathedral vs. Serra football: The Irish are reeling after a blowout loss on the road against Valley Christian, but won’t get a reprieve against Serra’s standout running game, although the Padres are coming off a loss to first-place Bellarmine last week. University vs. Marin Academy girls volleyball: This rivalry has gone back and forth in recent years. The Wildcats took the BCL West title game last season, but the Red Devils got revenge in the North Coast Section playoffs. Boys Soccer: International falls to Head-Royce in NCS first round

For the second season in a row, International high school has been knocked out of the North Coast Section Division II playoffs in the first round after a 2-0 loss to Head-Royce of Oakland on Wednesday at Kezar Stadium.

Neither team scored in the first half, but the 10th-seeded Jayhawks (11-4-3) broke through in the 50th minute on a goal from junior forward Robert Giesler and never looked back.

Baseball: International’s run ends in NCS semifinals against Head-Royce

OAKLAND — For four innings, International starting pitcher Jordan Malik walked the tightrope against a dangerous Head-Royce lineup — one run, four hits and seven stranded baserunnners.

But the danger of walking that right rope is that you can fall off at any time, and all it took was one inning to turn a nerve-wracking tie into a rout.

The Jayhawks rallied for six runs with two outs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and cruised to a 7-1 win in the North Coast Section Division V semifinals on Wednesday at Head-Royce.

Game of the day – International vs. Head-Royce baseball: As the final baseball team alive in the City, the Jaguars’ next opponent will be second-seeded Head-Royce (16-8). International may be dodging a bullet, as Head-Royce ace Spenser Linney, who has committed to Stanford, pitched against Athenian in the quarterfinals on Monday. The weather may not cooperate, but until further notice, the game is on.
