Football Game of the Week: Campolindo and Sacred Heart Cathedral are kindred spirits

By Jeremy Balan

The Sacred Heart Cathedral football team’s matchup against Campolindo this week will likely be its toughest test of the non-league season, but will also present a clash of kindred spirits.

A year ago, Campolindo was in the same spot the Irish are in now, early in the 2012 season.

Picked to finish last in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League, the Cougars went 14-0 and beat Marin Catholic in the North Coast Section Division III championship game, before falling to Washington Union of Fresno in the D-III state championship game.

Now, the Irish have been picked last by the West Catholic Athletic League coaches in their preseason poll, but surprised many when they dispatched Terra Nova with relative ease in their opener, a team that was ranked locally and regionally.

Baseball: Washington completes Transbay sweep with victory over Oakland Tech

By Zack Farmer

The Washington High School baseball team found itself in the same position this time last season.

It had won the opener of the Transbay Series against Oakland Tech and went into the second game with a chance to claim its first inter-section title since 2006.

The Eagles failed to get the job done a year ago, but did not let the opportunity slip away again.

Behind a strong performance from junior Christopher Hau on the mound and at the plate, Washington was able to avenge its 2011 Transbay loss by scoring four runs in the first inning and three more in the fourth to beat Oakland Tech 7-4 on Tuesday at San Francisco State University, sweeping the best-of-three series.

Baseball: Late Washington errors fuel Oakland Tech in Transbay finale

By Jeremy Balan

Washington High School held two separate leads late in the game, but it left the door open too many times for a dangerous Oakland Tech offense.

The Bulldogs exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth inning and went on to win 8-3 in the third and deciding game of the Transbay Championship on Tuesday at San Francisco State University. It is Oakland Tech’s second consecutive Transbay title.
