Boys Basketball: Sacred Heart Cathedral back on track after win over St. Ignatius
By Jeremy Balan
It’s safe to say the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys basketball team’s first quarter against Bellarmine on Saturday was the low point of its season.
The Irish trailed 32-3 after the opening quarter against the Bells, en route to their third straight West Catholic Athletic League loss, but more importantly, lost their confidence.
It may not be all back, but the Irish got a boost to that confidence on Wednesday by defeating rival St. Ignatius 59-51 on the road.

Boys Basketball: Mitty forwards do major damage to beat Sacred Heart Cathedral
By Lamonte Dewindt
Just like in last season’s trilogy between the Sacred Heart Cathedral and Mitty boys basketball teams, a Monarchs post player found a way to dominate the Irish inside.
The only difference this year is that the player was not standout forward Aaron Gordon.
This time it was 6-foot-5 forward Brandon Farrell and his 12 first-quarter points were the difference in Mitty’s 69-57 West Catholic Athletic League road win Friday night.

Antoine Porter’s breakout senior season may not have even happened if the Mission football team had another option to play quarterback.
Mission coach Joe Albano essentially put Porter, who is naturally a slotback or wide receiver, behind center because he had no one else.
Boys Basketball: Sacred Heart Cathedral holds off Riordan for fifth WCAL win
By Jeremy Balan
Sacred Heart Cathedral senior point guard Khalil James kept the Irish offense alfoat all night against visiting Riordan on Wednesday, so it was no shock the ball was in his hands with the game on the line.
Down by a point with 17 seconds remaining, James got the ball on the perimeter, drove to his left and into the key, drew an extra Riordan defender and dished the ball to unattended teammate Liam O’Reilly under the basket.
The junior forward then made a contested layup to give the Irish the final edge in a 55-54 West Catholic Athletic League win.

Girls Basketball: St. Francis hands Sacred Heart Cathedral first WCAL loss
By Jeremy Balan
There was a silver lining to the Sacred Heart Cathedral girls basketball team’s 44-40 home loss to St. Francis on Saturday night.
The Irish may have played one of their worst games of the year, but were still in position to win late against one of the better teams in the West Catholic Athletic League.
Football: John Lee out as Sacred Heart Cathedral head coach
By Jeremy Balan
(Developing story)
According to a source close to the Sacred Heart Cathedral athletic department, John Lee is no longer the head coach of the school’s varsity football team.
Sacred Heart athletic director Phil Freed confirmed that Lee would “not be returning” as head coach for the 2013 season, but would not comment on the details of the move or anything else regarding the future of the football program until the school officially releases the information on Monday. Lee will continue to be a full-time teacher at the school.
