Football: Sacred Heart Cathedral fades again in loss to Serra

Much like most of the games he has seen this season, Sacred Heart Cathedral head coach John Lee went into the locker room at halftime confident that his team was in good shape to get a victory.

This time his squad was locked in a 7-7 at the half against a Serra, but returned to the field to watch the Irish have another disappointing third quarter, leading to a 34-7 West Catholic Athletic League loss on Friday night at Kezar Stadium.

At the midpoint of the Academic Athletic Association season, it’s clear that the Turkey Day favorites reside at Lincoln and Mission high schools.

Both sit at 3-0 in league play and have all but clinched playoff spots already, but the final two postseason berths are very much up for grabs and there may not be a more important week for the contenders.

Football: Serra runs Riordan off the field in 56-0 WCAL rout

SAN MATEO – If Archbishop Riordan High School’s football team was encouraged by a relatively close loss to Bellarmine last week, those feelings quickly faded on the road against Serra on Friday night.

The Crusaders allowed 325 yards and five touchdowns by five different Serra runners, while being shutout by the Padres’ defense, in a disappointing 56-0 West Catholic Athletic League loss on Friday night.

Baseball: St. Ignatius bogged down by errors in loss to Serra in WCAL title game

SANTA CLARA — The St. Ignatius baseball team played like a it had a 44-year-old gorilla on its back against Serra in the West Catholic Athletic League championship game on Thursday at Santa Clara University’s Stephen Schott Stadium.

The Wildcats, who have not won a WCAL tournament title since the league began play in 1968, committed eight errors in the game and allowed six unearned runs in a 7-2 loss.
