Football Game of the Week: WCAL showdown in the Sunset

By Jeremy Balan

The default platitude in the West Catholic Athletic League and Central Coast Section football discussions this season has been pretty simple.

Bellarmine remains the king until someone knocks it off.

For the first time in a long time — maybe the first time since it left the Academic Athletic Association in 1968 — St. Ignatius has an opportunity to take the crown as the top team in the WCAL and in the CCS when the Wildcats host Bellarmine on Saturday.

MOUNTAIN VIEW – After jumping out to a 14-7 first-quarter lead, the St. Ignatius offense kept opening the door for a St. Francis comeback on Friday, but the Wildcats’ defense kept slamming it shut.

St. Ignatius limited St. Francis to a season-low 124 yards, forced four turnovers and scored a safety to pick up a 22-7 West Catholic Athletic League road win.

As much attention as the West Catholic Athletic League clash between Bellarmine and Serra is getting this week, just 20 miles south of San Mateo there is another meeting of unbeaten WCAL squads that is flying under the radar.

St. Ignatius travels down to Mountain View to take on St. Francis on Friday night, and as impressive as the Wildcats have been this season, it’s actually St. Francis that has been the biggest surprise.

Football Games of the Week: City WCAL schools don’t have recent history on their side

By Jeremy Balan

If recent history holds form, the San Francisco football teams of the West Catholic Athletic League are in for a rude awakening in their league openers this weekend.

City high schools Riordan, Sacred Heart Cathedral and St. Ignatius haven’t won a WCAL opener since 2008, when the Irish took down St. Francis and the Crusaders defeated Mitty.

Girls Volleyball: Sacred Heart Cathedral’s defense the difference in win over St. Francis

By Jeremy Balan

The greatest strength of the Sacred Heart Cathedral girls volleyball team was on full display in its West Catholic Athletic League opener against visiting St. Francis on Wednesday night.

The Irish probably have the best hitters in the City, but every team in the WCAL has good hitters.

What put Sacred Heart over the top in its 25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22 win over the Lancers was the Irish defense.
