Football: Lincoln edges Mission in Turkey Day thriller

By Jeremy Balan

The Academic Athletic Association football championship ultimately came down to 3 yards on Thursday at Kezar Stadium and Lincoln didn’t have its best player on the field.

After scoring with 23 seconds remaining to cut Mission’s lead to 21-20, Lincoln head coach Phil Ferrigno elected to go for a two-point conversion and the win.

Turkey Day Preview: Lincoln looking to break top-seed losing streak against Mission

By Jeremy Balan

While the Lincoln High School football team’s resounding 42-14 regular-season win over Mission makes the Mustangs considerable favorites in the Academic Athletic Association championship game on Thanksgiving Day, recent history is not on their side.

The last three regular-season AAA champions have all fallen short of winning Turkey Day titles, but Lincoln was the last team to do it, when it won its fourth straight championship in 2008.

Football: Mission ends 57-year championship drought with Turkey Day win over Washington

By Jeremy Balan

It was only fitting that the unlikeliest of Academic Athletic Association champions would win in one of the most unlikely ways possible.

After a dizzying sequence of events in the fourth quarter, Mission High School clinched its first AAA title since 1954 with a 12-7 win over defending champion Washington at rain-soaked Kezar Stadium on Thursday.

Football Game of the Week: Washington and Mission in the Turkey Day Tussle

By Jeremy Balan

The annual Turkey Day championship undoubtedly features the two best teams in the Academic Athletic Association and it also presents a clash of history.

The game between Washington High School and Mission on Thursday at Kezar Stadium will feature the team with the longest championship drought and last year’s champion.

Washington rolled to the championship last year with a 36-6 win over Balboa, while Mission hasn’t won a Turkey Day title since 1954 and hasn’t advanced to the holiday championship game since 1977.

Football: Running games leads Washington to first AAA title since 2003

Washington High School got to Turkey Day with a run-heavy attack, but the Eagles looked like an entirely different team early in the CIF-San Francisco Section/Academic Athletic Association championship game against Balboa on Thursday at Kezar Stadium.

The Eagles’ first four plays from scrimmage resulted in four incompletions, but Washington quickly reverted to the form that led them to the championship game, amassing 303 yards on the ground in a decisive 36-6 win over the Buccaneers. The win gives the Eagles their first AAA title since 2003.

Turkey Day Football Preview: Balboa and Washington looking to end championship droughts

By Jeremy Balan

Of the six long-standing football programs in the Academic Athletic Association, Balboa High School has one of the longest championship droughts, going without a Turkey Day title since 1984.

This year appeared to be just another title-less season for the Buccaneers (5-7), when they dropped all four of their non-league games and waited until the last week of the regular season to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot in the AAA.

But after beating previously league unbeaten and top-seeded Mission 28-8 in the semifinals, the Bucs are the hottest team in the AAA.
