Girls Volleyball: SHC falls short against Valley Christian in CCS title game

SAN JOSE – On a good day, the Sacred Heart Cathedral girls volleyball team can go toe-to-toe with Valley Christian.
On a bad day, like Saturday, the Irish look outmatched against the Warriors.
Top-seeded Valley Christian emphatically enforced its claim as the best Central Coast Section Division III team with a 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 win over the Irish in the section championship at Independence High School.

Sacred Heart Cathedral’s football team endured a brutal tale of two halves against Valley Christian of San Jose in a West Catholic Athletic League matchup on Friday night at Kezar Stadium.
After heading into halftime down just 8-0, the Irish conceded 35 points in long, one-sided third quarter that powered the Warriors to a 43-0 victory.

SAN JOSE – The West Catholic Athletic League should take notice of what happened in San Jose on Saturday night.
The league should also be advised moving forward – don’t get into a shootout with the St. Ignatius football team this season, because the Wildcats might not miss.
Riding a breakout performance from junior running back Elijah Dale, the visiting Wildcats had an answer for every Valley Christian touchdown in a 42-28 WCAL-opening win that snapped a five-year St. Ignatius winless streak in league openers.

City high schools Riordan, Sacred Heart Cathedral and St. Ignatius haven’t won a WCAL opener since 2008, when the Irish took down St. Francis and the Crusaders defeated Mitty.
Baseball: St. Ignatius earns elusive championship bid with win over Valley Christian

SAN JOSE – The last time a City team played in a West Catholic Athletic League championship game, Bay Area baseball icon Barry Bonds was on the field as a sophomore.
St. Ignatius, which was the last City team to play in the WCAL championship game when it lost to Bonds’ Serra squad in 1980, ended that daunting streak with a 3-1 win over third-seeded Valley Christian in the league semifinals on Wednesday at San Jose Municipal Stadium.
