Girls Volleyball: SHC falls short against Valley Christian in CCS title game

By Jeremy Balan

SAN JOSE – On a good day, the Sacred Heart Cathedral girls volleyball team can go toe-to-toe with Valley Christian.

On a bad day, like Saturday, the Irish look outmatched against the Warriors.

Top-seeded Valley Christian emphatically enforced its claim as the best Central Coast Section Division III team with a 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 win over the Irish in the section championship at Independence High School.

Football Game of the Week: Balboa and Galileo face off for final AAA playoff spot

By Jeremy Balan

Barring a substantial upset, the consequences of the matchup between the Balboa and Galileo high school football teams are pretty simple — win and you’re in.

Washington can complicate the Academic Athletic Association playoff picture considerably with an upset of Mission, but both programs are viewing the contest as a play-in game for the postseason.

Sacred Heart Cathedral’s football team endured a brutal tale of two halves against Valley Christian of San Jose in a West Catholic Athletic League matchup on Friday night at Kezar Stadium.

Football Game of the Week: St. Ignatius and St. Francis in ‘other’ big WCAL game

By Jeremy Balan

As much attention as the West Catholic Athletic League clash between Bellarmine and Serra is getting this week, just 20 miles south of San Mateo there is another meeting of unbeaten WCAL squads that is flying under the radar.

St. Ignatius travels down to Mountain View to take on St. Francis on Friday night, and as impressive as the Wildcats have been this season, it’s actually St. Francis that has been the biggest surprise.

Football: St. Ignatius nearly unstoppable on the road against Valley Christian

SAN JOSE – The West Catholic Athletic League should take notice of what happened in San Jose on Saturday night.

The league should also be advised moving forward – don’t get into a shootout with the St. Ignatius football team this season, because the Wildcats might not miss.

Riding a breakout performance from junior running back Elijah Dale, the visiting Wildcats had an answer for every Valley Christian touchdown in a 42-28 WCAL-opening win that snapped a five-year St. Ignatius winless streak in league openers.

Football Games of the Week: City WCAL schools don’t have recent history on their side

By Jeremy Balan

If recent history holds form, the San Francisco football teams of the West Catholic Athletic League are in for a rude awakening in their league openers this weekend.

City high schools Riordan, Sacred Heart Cathedral and St. Ignatius haven’t won a WCAL opener since 2008, when the Irish took down St. Francis and the Crusaders defeated Mitty.

Baseball: St. Ignatius earns elusive championship bid with win over Valley Christian

By Jeremy Balan

SAN JOSE – The last time a City team played in a West Catholic Athletic League championship game, Bay Area baseball icon Barry Bonds was on the field as a sophomore.

St. Ignatius, which was the last City team to play in the WCAL championship game when it lost to Bonds’ Serra squad in 1980, ended that daunting streak with a 3-1 win over third-seeded Valley Christian in the league semifinals on Wednesday at San Jose Municipal Stadium.
